Job Summary
The City of Bellevue is seeking a certified Group Fitness Instructor who is passionate about physical and mental well-being and enjoys sharing their expertise to inspire healthy living in others. Our Group Fitness Instructor will plan develop and instruct a variety of fitness formats for youth adults and seniors. This position works closely with and is supervised by the Recreation Program Coordinator. This position will work out of the Northwest Arts Center and Bellevue Boys & Girls Main Club in Downtown Bellevue as well as other City of Bellevue community centers as needed.
Work Schedule is part-time variable hours but will typically be 5 15 hours per week. Schedule to be determined at time of hire based on applicant availability and facility class needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop instruction class formats based on class descriptions and clientele fitness levels to deliver customer satisfaction.
- Oversee and encourage participants in achieving their fitness goals.
- Ensure a safe environment and confirm fitness equipment is in working condition and properly handled.
- Organize class areas including set up and take down of fitness equipment supply organization and light cleaning as needed.
- Arrive to class early prepared to teach providing a variety of music and workouts and remain after class for questions and to build rapport.
- Initiate friendly interaction with participants and provide professional level demonstrations and education in proper form and the use of equipment in classes.
- Ability to provide modifications as needed to ensure participants are reaching their individual fitness goals.
- Maintain standards in accordance with industry standards.
- Maintain certification as required by governing agency.
- Abide by and enforce policies and procedures mandated by the City of Bellevue.
- Maintain effective positive interaction with all staff with frequent and timely communication.
- Attend scheduled staff training sessions.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received and Exercised:
Typically receives general direction from a supervisor but frequently sets their own work objectives.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- National group fitness or personal training certification required.
- First Aid CPR or other specialized training or experience will be required.
- Skilled in handling conflict and emergency situations.
- Skilled in working with diverse groups of people in a tactful effective and respectful manner.
- Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff the community and program participants.
- Ability to communicate in an articulate and informative manner.
- Ability to provide clear instruction both written and verbal.
- Ability to teach a variety of formats to a variety of ages.
- Demonstrated punctuality and reliability in work habits.
- Ability to accept guidance and instruction from your supervisor and to communicate effectively with them.
- Ability to work various schedules including mornings afternoon evenings and weekends; schedule determined at time of hire based on availability and facility needs.
- A professional well-groomed appearance and positive attitude is desired.
- Customer service and problem-solving skills.
- Self-motivation to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
- No selling of products or services on-site other than COB programs/services unless approved by supervisor.
- Must pass a Washington State Patrol Background Check.
Education Experience and Other Requirements
- Valid current Washington State drivers license.
- High school diploma or a GED equivalent and 2 years of related experience.
- Or any equivalent combination of education experience and training that provides the required knowledge skills and abilities.
- One year of experience teaching or leading groups preferred.
- Possession of a current Group Fitness Certification Personal Training Certification or a related NCAA-accredited certification.

Physical Demands
Work will be performed in a community center fitness setting. The noise level in the work environment is varied but will include music and use of a lapel microphone.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time and reach to inspect maintain and operate fitness equipment.
- Some bending stopping climbing and lifting will be required.
- Ability to push pull lift and/or carry 50 pounds.
- Ability to speak and hear to exchange information.
- Visual acuity to observe activity and to read and produce written materials.
Definition of a Variable Employee: This is a variable non-exempt and non-union position.
- Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire.
- Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 28 hours per week or less.
- Note: Employee will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (or for 130 hours per month).
