About the role

Western Australias largest power system the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) is rapidly evolving. All coal fired power stations are expected to retire over the next five years meaning the SWIS is shifting from its historic paradigm of baseload and peaking dominated by coal-fired generation to a future of renewables firmed with storage and backed up by gas-powered generation.

The WA System Design and Transformation Group (SDT) is focussed on how we navigate the energy future through identifying planning for and managing emerging system challenges and opportunities whilst ensuring Western Australians continue to have access to secure reliable and affordable energy in the years to come.

The WA Future System and Design Team (FSD) plays a pivotal role in developing the modelling capabilities and delivering the insights that underpin AEMOs long term planning publications and contributions to policy development across both electricity and gas.

In this role you will lead strategic market and power system modelling activities and support the development of AEMOs responses to resource adequacy and system security challenges in the SWIS.

You will thrive in this role by providing pragmatic technical leadership and effectively collaborating and communicating with peers and stakeholders.

What you will be doing

  • Evolve AEMOs modelling capabilities in collaboration with industry partners
  • Advise and help develop AEMO position on future risks potential mitigations and trade-offs
  • Support reform development and implementation
  • Translate data into insights that support development of policy reforms and major planning publications (including the Wholesale Electricity Market Electricity Statement of Opportunities the WA Gas Statement of Opportunities and the SWIS Engineering Roadmap).

What you will bring to the role Include in our Internal and External Adverts

  • Degree in a relevant discipline such as engineering computer science or economics.
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex technical concepts.
  • Extensive experience in developing maintaining and analysing the outcomes from PLEXOS models in the energy sector.
  • Experience in the energy sector is essential. Experience in both the operation and planning of large power systems is favourable.
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively managing complex projects or reforms and facilitating collaboration and engagement with diverse groups of industry stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience in negotiating and influencing outcomes whilst maintaining effective working relationships at all levels. Strong influencing and communication skills.
