Position Summary:
The Rice360 Institute for Global Health Technologies (Rice360) a multidisciplinary institute at Rice University is a leader in global health technology education research and implementation with a distinctive focus on experiential and problem-based learning. Rice360 develops highly effective low-cost healthcare solutions addressing critical healthcare needs in underserved communities and educates a cadre of future leaders to continue to innovate and implement solutions. Rice360 works closely with partners in underserved communities throughout the world including low- and middle-income countries and the United States.
Rice University is the lead institution for the Center for Innovation and Translation of Point-of-Care Technologies for Expanded Cancer Care Access (CITEC). Joining collaborators at Rice University The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Baylor College of Medicine The University of São Paulo and Barretos Cancer Hospital in Brazil and partners in Mozambique at The Universidade Eduardo Mondlane and Ministry of Health CITEC will unite a global community of investigators to support the development evaluation refinement and translation of a pipeline of POC technologies to enable early detection and treatment of cancer with a focus on meeting the needs of medically underserved populations both in the U.S. and LMICs. CITEC will identify high-priority clinical needs for POC cancer technologies; accelerate development of effective affordable technologies to meet these needs; evaluate and improve the clinical and public health impact of POC technologies in low- and high-resource settings; and train a diverse workforce of developers and users to create and disseminate more accessible POC technologies. CITEC will have a major impact on expanded access to healthcare for prevention diagnosis and early treatment of cancer in the U.S. and worldwide and will work with the NIH Point-of-Care Technology Research Network (POCTRN) to build a strong team of global partners to strengthen and sustain POC technology development.
Rice360 is seeking a CITEC medical technology research and development (R&D) specialist who under the supervision of Rice360 faculty director and CITEC program director (PD) Dr. Rebecca Richards-Kortum and CITEC Co-PIs will provide technical assistance to the portfolio of sub-projects funded through CITEC on the design laboratory testing and clinical evaluation of new point-of-care cancer screening and diagnostic technologies for medically underserved settings including feedback on prototype development troubleshooting any issues and analysis of data and reporting of results. The CITEC medical technology R&D specialist will directly engage with the sub-project PIs and research teams to provide technical direction to funded projects. They will track progress against sub-project milestones and deliverables and provide links to appropriate technical commercialization and regulatory support together with access to key infrastructure necessary for technology refinement and translation. Working with the PD/PIs they will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to manage research partnerships with global institutions across Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa as well as within the Texas Medical Center.
Ideal Candidate Statement:
The ideal candidate is a postdoctoral biomedical engineer with significant experience in developing evaluating and conducting clinical research on cancer screening and diagnostic point-of-care technologies in underserved communities in the United States and internationally particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. They have strong organizational skills to handle complex workflows and ensure timely high-quality delivery of project deliverables as well as demonstrated exceptional communication skills to effectively collaborate with faculty staff students and external partners. They have experience with grant-funded programs/projects within a research university and/or international development environment. They have a demonstrated record of meaningful contribution to the accomplishment of outcomes for an international multi-partner project supported by U.S. government funding. They are resourceful and adaptable in a multisectoral cross-cultural environment with demonstrated sensitivity to low-resource settings are experienced with travel to Africa and/or Latin America and have a willingness and ability to travel nationally and internationally. A strategic mindset problem-solving ability and a commitment to advancing healthcare innovationbeing passionate about medical technology innovation to advance healthcare access in underserved communitiesare critical for success in this role.
Workplace Requirements:
This is a Houston-based part-time 20-hours-per-week position (with occasional early morning evening or weekend work required to accommodate time zone differences for meetings with partners) with periodic domestic and international travel to partner sites including Brazil and Rice policy 440 work arrangements may be subject to change.
Hiring Range: $70000/year full-time equivalent contingent upon qualifications and experience.
