About the role.

The Senior Compliance Expert is responsible for ensuring that finished products manufactured or marketed in China comply with relevant regulations regarding product ingredients and labeling. This role also encompasses standards management. As a subject matter expert in food and labeling regulations as well as standards management this position forms the foundation for successful execution of tactical activities (e.g. supporting formulation and product development) and long-term strategies and projects (e.g. implementing new regulations and internal label compliance initiatives). The position also requires close communication with compliance representatives in Southeast Asian markets to ensure timely implementation of export market requirements in product compliance management.

What youll be doing.

  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert on Food Regulations and Guidelines Promulgated by Regulatory Authorities (Local/National/Regional):
  • Develop and enhance processes in China for reviewing and approving product formulations ingredients labels and other marketing materials. Investigate review interpret and provide recommendations on regulatory positions.
  • Lead change management or training programs to help cross-functional team members enhance contributions to regulatory compliance achieving continuous efficiency and accuracy.
  • Support business partners (such as procurement R&D marketing) in new product development reformulation and label redesign to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Manage regulatory approval processes with external consultants as needed.
  • Monitor emerging regulations related to product ingredients raw materials and food labeling requirements communicate and coordinate with cross-functional teams to assess impact prepare for changes and ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Understand and communicate the development and promulgation process of regulations and governmental guidelines and encourage proactive industry involvement to influence regulatory outcomes.
  • Participate in Relevant Industry Associations and Other NGOs:
  • Review government and industry proposals;
  • Communicate company positions and feedback;
  • Request support regarding regulatory matters;
  • Share and expand knowledge on best practices in compliant labeling;
  • Benchmark and calibrate against industry best practices.
  • Establish Appropriate Working Relationships with Regulatory Authorities and Assist in Addressing Potential Issues:
  • Participate in global projects and other initiatives such as issue management and monitoring of emerging international regulations.
  • Coordinate with other cross-functional teams (e.g. quality/food safety legal communications) to generate coordinate or support responses to client or government requests.
  • Communicate emerging regional regulations to food safety team members such as standards for microorganisms contaminants and food safety management programs.
  • Manage the development of specifications in China serve as the local lead for specification systems (PLM) and establish business processes to ensure applicability of new product specifications. Support operational specification change processes.
  • Manage commercialization activities support new product development and network adjustments (import/export) ensuring accurate establishment of specifications and related data. Responsible for non-development aspects of new product commercializationspecification and data activation.
  • Provide investigation interpretation and strategic recommendations on atypical regulatory matters or business projects (e.g. claims or other sensitive labeling issues).
  • Provide support during food recall/crisis management situations.

What youll need to be successful.

  • Bachelors degree or above in Food Science Food Safety or related technical disciplines; Masters degree preferred.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years experience in regulatory affairs quality or technical functions within large global food manufacturing enterprises.
  • Knowledge and experience with Chinese regulatory affairs capable of serving as the companys authority and leader in regulatory and quality complianceincluding but not limited to requirements for food ingredients standards and label review/approval. Expertise in substantiation of product marketing claims and labeling information; familiarity with food safety and quality requirements (e.g. microbial standards contaminants).
  • Experience in compliance risk assessment.
  • Experience using specification systems.
  • Thorough understanding of government bodies and regulatory approval procedures with hands-on experience interacting with regulatory authorities for issue resolution.
  • Familiarity with government approval procedures (e.g. plant registration/approval).
  • Participation in trade associations and working committees to review regulations and industry initiatives actively influencing regulatory outcomes.
  • Understanding of third-party certification requirements and processes.
  • Proven record of leading transformational projects and successfully influencing business outcomes.
  • Must possess strong practical abilities intellectual capacity and communication skills with a passion to drive results.
  • Ability to influence key stakeholders and colleagues independently take ownership set standards and oversee implementation of critical requirements.
  • Capable of building strong relationships and credibility with internal and key external strategic partners.
  • Strong project planning skills capable of coordinating resources across multiple projects; able to lead others in key projects.
  • Data analysis skills able to derive insights from data to drive decisions strategy and prioritization.
  • Excellent communication skills; able to communicate views clearly and convincingly to executives and diverse audiences both orally and in writing.
  • Willing to engage in challenging conversations across all company levels.
  • A motivated and outstanding team member able to communicate and present results effectively to management and across business teams.
  • Fluency in English (listening speaking reading and writing).
