Elk Island Public Schools Central Services building is located in Sherwood Park at 683 Wye Road. Providing services for the Division Central Services is comprised of eight departments in addition to the Board of Trustees. The departments include Education Executive Communication Services Facility Services Student Transportation Human Resources Financial Services Supports for Students and Information Technologies. Central Services is staffed by 190 employees.

JOB SUMMARY
The Facilities Maintenance Technician is responsible for helping to ensure optimal systems and equipment functionality at Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) facilities. The position conducts quality assessments and monitors the mechanical electrical plumbing safety and control systems for facilities. The position performs minor repairs as needed while ensuring compliance with applicable building codes and standards and assists tradespeople with tasks related to plumbing carpentry electrical and HVAC systems.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Equipment and Systems
- Regularly monitor and inspect buildings and equipment to identify and diagnose potential problems and troubleshoot issues to find and implement solutions.
- Perform both routine and emergency repairs on building systems and equipment including electrical heating and plumbing.
- Conduct quality checks on equipment and systems to ensure standards are met and to identify issues.
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance procedures and schedules.
- Report safety hazards or equipment malfunctions/repairs to supervisors.
- Use a variety of hand power and diagnostic tools to complete tasks.
- Ensure proper maintenance repair and storage of tools supplies and maintenance materials.
- Operate forklift and provide support with the use of aerial lifts as required.
- Maintain the cold storage area filter shed / water treatment shed back lot and other designated facility spaces.
General Maintenance
- Perform maintenance and repair work at EIPS facilities while ensuring compliance with applicable building codes and standards.
- Assist tradespeople with major maintenance projects and other tasks related to plumbing carpentry electrical systems and lighting.
- Respond to unexpected maintenance issues including emergencies and remediation needs.
- Manage work requests from site staff and coordinate with and oversee contractors for specialized repairs or services.
- Perform building repairs and general carpentry tasks including graffiti removal drywall preparation painting and staining wood surfaces and millwork and assist with general maintenance as needed.
- Ensure all maintenance activities comply with safety standards and regulations including checking and maintaining fire and security alarms.
- Perform duties of standby and after hours call out as required and other duties assigned.
- Serve as backup support for the Shipping/Receiver position as needed.
Record Keeping
- Maintain accurate work order records and prioritize work tasks and orders accordingly.
- Prepare administrative documentation for time tracking materials and supplies special requests and enter information into the work order system.
- Maintain inventory records for equipment and supplies and advise supervisors of inventory needs.
- Pick-up parts orders and make deliveries as needed to support maintenance operations.
- Provide input for the maintenance budget.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- 5th Class Power Engineering Certificate and registration with ABSA.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience
2 years of related experience.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of building mechanical electrical and plumbing systems equipment and maintenance.
- Skill in using tools and equipment including shop and test equipment used in mechanical maintenance carpentry and associated trades.
- Working knowledge of building codes fire and safety codes regulations and occupational hazards.
- Strong problem-solving abilities to identify interpret and correct deficiencies and faults.
- Detail orientation to ensure accuracy in repairs and purchasing of parts and materials.
- Strong written and speaking English communication skills including interpersonal skills.
- Ability to effectively work in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.
- Skills in prioritization and organization of tasks and time management.
- Ability to adapt to change and frequent work interruptions.
- Good computer skills to manage work order status and completion.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including lifting bending and climbing.
Qualifications Certifications and Designations
Valid Alberta Drivers License in good standing as per the requirements of the Elk Island Public Schools Vehicle and Equipment Operating Manual.
