About the Communications and Media Group

The Group is the lead advisor to the Australian Government on communications and media matters. We support the Government to promote economic growth and social benefits by helping all Australians realise the opportunities of digital technologies and communication and media services. Our aim is to create an environment in which all Australians have access to high quality communications and media services. This helps support access to education employment and other essential services providing opportunities for improving social cohesion and economic productivity.

We are responsible for broadband telecommunications media and digital platform industry policy providing advice on the Australian market as well as international developments. We advise on communications infrastructure investment and consumer policy radiocommunications policy online safety as well as provide oversight of the Governments shareholding interests in Australia Post and the National Broadband Network.

What will you do

Are you ready to take the next step in your career We are looking for highly motivated Directors (EL2) in the Communications and Media Group. There are four Divisions in the Group providing advice on communications infrastructure communications services and consumer matters media policy as well as digital platforms online safety and Australias media classification scheme. As a Director in the Group you will report to the Assistant Secretary in one of these divisions to:

  • Provide advice on communications and media policy ranging from broadcasting to social media and from radiocommunications to digital inclusion depending on the division
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Group to pursue strategic opportunities such as understanding and responding to the emergence of new communications and digital technologies
  • Engage with external stakeholders to better inform advice and policy direction including government business enterprises such as the National Broadband Network and Australia Post
  • Support for the Minister to provide strategic policy guidance to portfolio agencies such as the Australian Communications and Media Authority
  • Develop your teams skills and knowledge and provide them the support and resources to successfully deliver on your work responsibilities
  • Some roles may require occasional international travel

Who are we looking for

To be a successful applicant you should demonstrate your capability against the Executive level 2 Work level standards and identify your experience in the following areas:

  • The ability to evaluate complex information to make connections and sound decisions while exercising good judgement
  • The ability to communicate effectively both written and verbal to deliver information in a variety of formats for a range of audiences including to represent Australia internationally
  • The provision of formal advice to the Executive and Government such as Cabinet submissions and proposals for new policies and programs
  • The development of project plans tapping into expertise and resources and being creative in your thinking to get good outcomes
  • The ability to manage challenges especially when dealing with more complex policy issues
  • The ability to develop good relationships and leverage technical expertise from across government industry and key stakeholders including international allies.
  • Being responsive to priority work while considering longer-term impacts and outcomes.
  • The ability to lead and mentor a team with significant responsibilities delegated to team members
  • The willingness to guide the achievement of team outcomes monitor team progress and follow through to delivery
  • A willingness to continue to learn develop and foster an environment for team members to do the same.

International travel may be required for at least one of the roles.

Eligibility requirements

Employment with the Department of Infrastructure Transport Regional Development Communications Sport and the Arts is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:

  • Citizenship: candidates must be an Australian citizen at the time of submitting your application.
  • Health Assessment: The preferred candidate may be required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the departments preferred medical provider.
  • Security Clearance: The successful candidate must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance at Baseline and Negative Vetting 1 Level. You must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information. You must have lived in Australia or have a checkable background for at least the preceding five years for Baseline or Negative Vetting clearances. More information on the security clearance vetting process is available on the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) website.
  • Police check: The successful candidate must satisfactory complete an Australian Federal Police criminal history check.
  • Integrity and Performance check: The successful candidate must satisfy the requirements in an Integrity and Performance check which is completed by your most recent employer.

A selection panel will be established to assess your suitability against the advertised role.
