GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Join the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) as a Professional Scientist (Natural Resources Analyst ENNR09) and specialize in Wyomings geology and petroleum resources.This position offers a unique opportunity to delve into subsurface resource potential hydrocarbon generation mountain building and basin formation contributing to the WSGS mission of promoting the beneficial and environmentally sound use of Wyomings geologic mineral and energy resources.
What we are looking for
- Education: Bachelors degree in the sciences or a closely related field (masters degree in geology preferred)
- Experience: 03 years of progressive work experience in geology with acquired knowledge at the level of a Natural Resource Specialist
- Skills: Strong writing and public-speaking skills; familiarity with subsurface geologic interpretation software (e.g. Petra) GIS (ArcPro) and well log interpretation;broad background in petroleum geology sedimentology stratigraphy structural geology economic geology or airborne geophysics; strong collaboration skills; ability to conduct independent office and field work
- Wyoming Geology: Familiarity with Wyomings geology and natural resources is a strong plus

- Data analysis: Use subsurface geological data such as geophysical well logs and cores to determine sthe tructure and stratigraphy of Wyomings basins
- Mapping and modeling: Use advanced software to create detailed 2D and 3D geological maps and models
- Fieldwork: Plan and conduct field studies to collect geological samples map bedrock and meticulously document geological formations through measured stratigraphic sections
- Reporting: Prepare detailed technical reports that summarize findings and provide recommendations
- Project management: Assist in managing projects including budgeting and timeline management; opportunity to work as part of a team of fellow geologists
- Resource forecasting: Apply your insight into Wyomings energy sectors to forecast trends in oil and gas pricing and production essential for state revenue planning
- Public outreach: Respond to inquiries from the public about Wyomings geology deliver engaging presentations and represent the agency at public outreach events
Qualifications
PREFERENCES:
A masters degree in geology with a background in oil and gas geology carbon sequestration airborne geophysics geologic modeling groundwater sedimentology stratigraphy structural geology or economic geology is preferred.

- Geologic software: Understanding of and familiarity with GIS and subsurface geologic interpretation software
- Communication skills:Strong written and verbal communication skills for writing reports and public speaking
- Wyoming geology: Familiarity with Wyomings geology and natural resources (preferred)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelors (typically in The Sciences)
Experience:
0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in The Sciences) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Natural Resources Specialist
OR
Education & ExperienceSubstitution:
4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in The Sciences) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Natural Resources Specialist

- Occasional travel to the field is required for this position.
- Applicants must be capable of strenuous work in sometimes difficult environments and meet the requirements to operate a state vehicle.
