Job Summary:

The Mead Witter School of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a 100%-time French Horn Teaching Faculty. This position is a non-tenure track one-year temporary position with the possibility of a one-year renewal or it may become a permanent position based on funding and departmental need. This appointment will begin in the fall semester of 2026 with a start date of August 17 2026.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience of successful teaching at the advanced level and significant experience in the field of French horn performance. We seek a colleague who will join a nationally renowned faculty and staff and contribute to our program through teaching courses that develop and support a wide range of musical endeavors.

The instructor in this position will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Instruction:

    • Teach students in the French horn studio which may include Doctoral students and/or dissertators.

    • Rehearse and perform with the Wisconsin Brass Quintet

    • Teach a weekly studio class

    • Teach the 3-week horn section of Brass Fundamentals for Music Education students.

    • Teach chamber music ensembles each semester

    • Hold regular office hours

  • Department/Area Responsibilities:

    • Attend all departmental and area meetings as required

    • Recruitment of students for the French horn studio

    • Participate in undergraduate juries for the brass area at the end of each semester

    • Attend graduate and undergraduate audition days

    • Participate in ensemble placement auditions

    • Supervise teaching assistants

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • Provides classroom online and/or laboratory instruction including grading
  • Assists in developing techniques and/or model programs for carrying out instructional goals in disciplinary area and may help identify ways in which new techniques could be of assistance
  • Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
  • Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy
  • Supervises the day to day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed

Compensation:

The expected salary for this position is $57000 (9-month) for highly experienced candidates. Actual pay will be based on experience and qualifications.
