The Nursing Manager I (Charge Nurse) oversees nursing care on an assigned shift or area by supervising nursing practices and/or staff assessing the needs of patients and implementing appropriate nursing interventions determining if a physicians attention is necessary and following physicians orders to ensure medical care is provided to individuals with mental illnesses according to standard nursing practices and agency policy.

This position works a combination of evening and night hours including every sixth weekend and every sixth holiday along with flexible hours to allow for training and monthly charge nurse meetings. Primary work hours will be between 2:30 p.m. - 2:30 a.m.

Licenses and Certifications:

Must be licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the State of South Dakota.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Knowledge of:

  • professional nursing theory and practices;
  • recent developments in the field of professional nursing applicable to the area of assignment;
  • treatment planning;
  • clinical procedures
  • psychiatric treatment and counseling techniques;
  • serious emotional disturbances mental illness and chemical dependency;
  • methods of supervision of adults and adolescents in an in-patient psychiatric treatment facility.


Ability to:

  • communicate goals and expectations to team members;
  • write and develop treatment plans upon admission;
  • create a positive work environment that maximizes the strengths of members and focuses on individual and team developmental areas in order to increase the capability of staff and to ensure delivery of quality care;
  • engage in effective people management activities such as interviewing hiring and training including personnel actions such as performance reviews and corrective action to ensure adequate and competent staff;
  • coordinate team and all activities including assigning and reviewing work with the aim of providing the highest quality of care and
  • integrate team activities to resolve both routine and complex issues and situations;
  • supervise and monitor the performance of individual team members providing guidance and coaching and motivating them to achieve their performance objectives;
  • keep records and charts;
  • follow oral and written instructions;
  • communicate clearly and concisely;
  • operate a variety of medical equipment;
  • make reports on observations;
  • apply general nursing techniques and practices;
  • instruct or train nursing and direct care staff;
  • maintain a helpful and sympathetic attitude toward patients;
  • deal tactfully with patients and staff.


This position is eligible for Veterans Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
