Position Overview
We are searching for a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer to join our Mechanical Engineering Team in Darmstadt Germany. This hands-on position blends advanced mechanical design using Autodesk Inventor with the practical assembly and integration of laser vacuum and diagnostic systems in both laboratory and cleanroom environments. You will collaborate closely with laser engineers physicists diagnostics experts and controls/electrical teams to develop and assemble the next-generation LIDT test platform.

Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design & CAD (Inventor)

  • Develop detailed 3D CAD models in Autodesk Inventor for laser system components optomechanics beamlines diagnostic mounts and vacuum hardware.

  • Prepare manufacturing drawings layouts assemblies BOMs and engineering documentation.

  • Create design concepts prototypes and visualization assets for reviews and presentations.

Hands-On Engineering & Assembly

  • Support assembly installation and alignment of laser components optical mounts vacuum systems mechanical structures and diagnostics.

  • Work in cleanroom settings during build and integration activities.

  • Participate in mechanical fit checks iterative designbuild cycles and onsite troubleshooting.

System Integration (Laser Vacuum Diagnostics)

  • Contribute to the mechanical integration of:

    • Laser subsystems

    • Optomechanical assemblies

    • Large- and small-format optics

    • Vacuum chambers feedthroughs and pumping systems

    • Diagnostic and target delivery systems

  • Ensure designs meet standards for mechanical stability thermal management cleanliness and vacuum compatibility.

Project Support

  • Assist with infrastructure installations related to the LIDT system.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teamsincluding laser controls electrical and facilitiesto deliver integrated solutions within project timelines.

  • Support procurement activities and liaise with vendors for mechanical components and assemblies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD with Autodesk Inventor preferred.

  • Several years of experience in mechanical design for complex systems.

  • Proven ability to deliver complete mechanical designs drawings and assemblies.

Preferred Knowledge / Experience

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:

    • Vacuum system design (UHV/XHV chambers flanges pumping feedthroughs)

    • Cleanroom procedures (ISO class environments assembly protocols contamination control)

    • Laser system or optomechanical integration (optics mounts alignment tolerances beam paths)

    • High-precision mechanical assemblies in laboratory photonics or semiconductor contexts

  • Design expertise in stability vibration minimization and thermal management

Personal Qualities

  • Hands-on practical engineering approach with strong problem-solving abilities

  • Effective team player adaptable to evolving requirements

  • High attention to detail and quality in engineering work

  • Excellent communication skills and self-motivation in a fast-paced environment

Work Requirements

  • Based in Darmstadt Germany with 80% on-site work due to the hands-on nature of the role

  • Willingness to work in laboratory and cleanroom environments

  • Occasional travel to vendors partners or other Focused Energy locations as required
