Introduction

A vacancy for a Sessional Psychiatrist position exists at Life Nkanyisa Waverley Care Centre situated at Germiston Johannesburg. This position will report to the Hospital Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for the psychiatric care of all patients.

Critical Outputs

Clinical care - Admission history taking mental status examination and physical examination of chronic psychiatric patients formulation development and execution of evidence based and compassionate care plans follow-up and routine 6 monthly psychiatric evaluation of patients including writing of periodical reports. Pre-discharge evaluation continuation of treatment. Play an active role in the rehabilitation programme.
Assessment of medical and psychiatric emergencies. Counselling and education of patients families. Proper clinical record keeping including all laboratory results. Preparation of referral letters and discharge summaries for all patients. Participation in ward/departmental administrative duties. Teaching of nursing staff/multi-disciplinary team.
Clinical Efficiency - The application of cost containment measures in service delivery is important.
Quality care - Commitment to highest level of care ethics professionalism and punctuality. Reporting and managing of adverse events and deaths.
Patient care information system - Assist in ensuring the database is maintained concerning: clinical gender diagnosis treatment plan referrals and discharges.
Research - Keep abreast with present developments in the field and to participate in research projects relevant to the specific service field.
Legislation standards policies and procedures - Compliance with the rules and regulations of the Health Act Mental Act LRA OHSA. Adherence to company standards policies and procedures as well as DOH service level agreement
Networking - Attendance of multi-disciplinary meetings. Consultation with colleagues liaise with district health and hospital service structures. Attendance of academic meetings as a member of professional body.
Training - In-service training of nursing and supplementary health professions and new MO/SMO appointees. Clinical guidance to management.
Ensure ongoing psychiatric care. Duty roster planning together with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure coverage of hospital.
Supervision: Take care of material resources in the medical departments.
A formal comprehensive referral should be written to the referral facility and a copy made of same which must be placed in the patients file
All duties relevant to psychiatric care of patients.
MHCA report-writing.
All duties pertaining to team interaction

Requirements

MBChB or equivalent
MMed Psych
Grade 12 Certificate
Professional registration and insurance HPCSA
Minimum of three (3) years post internship experience is a requirement
Experience in psychiatry and mental health rehab knowledge skill and experience
Good understanding of mental health principles
A valid SA drivers license
