All year every year Te Huka Mātauraka offers a true home away from home for our tauira Māori. As the heart of Māori life on campus we provide services support motivation and encouragement grounded in tikanga and whanaungatanga.

We are an iwi-diverse whānau of kaimahi who are committed to ensuring tauira have access to a welcoming culturally rich environment throughout their academic hikoi. Our services span academic and tutorial expertise tuakana-teina support Year 13 to first-year transition support and clinical and therapeutic care when challenges require more than encouragement and awhi.

The role Te mahi

Based within the whānau of Te Huka Mātauraka The Māori Centre the Kaituitui Mātauraka Academic Programme Coordinator is responsible for delivering our Academic Programme. This includes the appointment and support of tutors registering and streaming tauira Māori into tutorials creating tutorial opportunities in response to demand and overseeing attendance engagement and academic progress.

This role plays a key part in ensuring tauira have access to high-quality academic support and culturally grounded learning environments that enhance their success at the University of Otago.

While the role is based at Te Huka Mātauraka it also has a strong partnership with the Māori Health Workforce Development Unit (MHWDU). Together both teams collaborate to ensure Māori Health Sciences students receive coordinated high-quality academic support throughout the year including tutorials workshops and exam preparation initiatives.

We are looking for a dynamic person that can engage young people well and their whānau. They will have a strong understanding of the tertiary environment and enjoy working within a busy and vibrant māori space. Most importantly they will be passionate about supporting Māori tauira to be the very best they can be. They will also be searching for a work environment that resonates whānau supports and cares for one another.

Key competencies include:
A solid understanding of Te Ao Māori underpinned by tikanga Māori values along with proficiency in te reo Māori or a willingness to learn and use it.
Strong event coordination skills and the ability to respond effectively to changing situations.
Experience maintaining large amounts of data and information safely and accurately.
Excellent time management skills including timetabling and workflow coordination.
An improvement mindset with the ability to identify solutions that enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Strength in building and maintaining relationships with tauira whānau colleagues tutors and relevant external staff and partners.
Experience using University systems (e.g. Blackboard Web Kiosk eVision Business Objects).
High proficiency with standard software applications including Microsoft Office databases and online communication platforms.

This is a full-time (1.0FTE) fixed-term position for two years available from January 2026 based in Ōtepoti Dunedin. A 0.8 FTE position is negotiable for the right candidate.

The salary range for the academic position is $75631 to $80503 Top of Range $88750.
