GIS (Geographic Information System) Engineer

Context

As a GIS Engineer you will be a part of TACTIS Project which develops a powerful tactical and technical simulation platform tailored for combined forces instruction and training within Thales Training & Simulation Business Line.

TACTIS is the most sophisticated simulation training platform fitting the combined forces needs and requirements in complex battlefield scenarios.

To strengthen our project we are seeking a Geomatics / GIS engineer for simulation purposes.

He/she will be involved in the production of a new terrain for a land simulation project (buildings vegetation street furniture etc.).

Main responsibilities will include:

• Ensuring the production of virtual terrains using tools that are partly commercially available and partly specifically developed by THALES. Virtual terrains may be as large as an entire country.
• Developing tools to automate the processing of geographic data.
• Acquiring validating producing and managing high-quality geographic data for a synthetic environment as close to reality as possible.
• Managing the geographical database instances used by the department.
• Adhering to cost and schedule constraints.
• Producing animated 3D objects for the simulated environment from commercial 3D models or models created by subcontractors this would be an advantage.
• Integrating 3D models created by graphic designer colleagues into the synthetic environment.
• Producing comprehensive and high-quality documentation to ensure knowledge retention.

A good level of English is required.

Skills:

• Geomatics and GIS experience
• Ensuring virtual terrain production using commercial tools such as:
  • QGIS
  • GlobalMapper
  • PostGre / PostGIS
  • FME
  • CityEngine

• Experience in geographic data management
• Significant experience in managing geographic data (acquisition validation database management in SQL).
• Experience in 3D modeling
• Experience in producing animated 3D objects using commercial 3D models or models created by subcontractors.
• This includes proficiency with the following tools:
  • MAYA
  • Photoshop

• Experience with the following programming languages:
  • Python
  • ETL
  • SQL

• Knowledge of terrain production tools would be a plus (Terratools VBS Bohemian Interactive Simulation tool suite)
