Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree (Masters Preferred)
- Tuberculin Skin Test certifying that the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis.
- Experience as a certified/licensed Athletic Trainer.
- Board of Certification for Athletic Trainer
- Virginia License/Board of Medicine in Virginia
- CPR/AED Certified (Instructor Preferred)
- Virginia Teaching License or Eligible for Provisional License
Nature of Position
- The athletic trainer works under the direction of the school principal and the athletic director.
- The athletic trainer will report directly to the Senior Coordinator Athletics.
- The athletic trainer will:
- Have a valid first aid and CPR card
- Follow the physicians orders when treating athletic injuries
- Provide emergency care and basic first aid when needed
- Be expected to implement and follow through with the athletic emergency plan
- Provide taping and bandaging when appropriate
- Be expected to record all injuries daily on a treatment chart
- Write an injury report on all athletic injuries requiring the use of the student athletic insurance or parent insurance. A copy of these forms will be sent to the Senior Coordinator Athletics Risk Management and school principal
- Determine the status of all injured athletics which will include: Acute Care; Post-acute care; Rehabilitation; Return to activity (this will be done in consultation with the Senior Coordinator Athletics Clinical Preceptor and team physician); Contacting parents when appropriate; Reporting to head coaches on status and progress of all injured athletes; and Monitor all environment aspects i.e. weather and field conditions. He/She will notify head coaches and Senior Coordinator Athletics and athletic director of these conditions.
- Serve as a monitor for all interested high school student athletic trainers (with the Athletic Directors approval)
- Inventory and monitor all supplies throughout the school year. Assist with developing the athletic training budget with the school athletic director.
- Be responsible for all athletic training kits. This will include stocking and making sure each team has an athletic training kit.
- Be expected to follow the practice/game plan procedures
- Be expected to follow the scheduled hours that have been developed. If conflict arises the athletic trainer should notify the Senior Coordinator Athletics athletic director and head coach.
- Be expected to maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times.
- Be expected to maintain a neat and clean athletic training clinic at all times which will include supervision of ice machine and whirlpools.
- Offer his/her first aid skills to visiting teams if requested.
- Adhere to the Norfolk Public Schools weight room supervision policy.
- Become familiar with the Norfolk Public Schools blood borne pathogen guidelines.
- Become familiar with Norfolk Public Schools concussion policy.
- Teach one sports medicine class during the academic year.
