To serve as a professional staff employee of the Indiana State Police (ISP) whose primary responsibility is to support the laboratorys responsibilities in routine forensic biology analysis with associated court presentation.

Job Duties

  • Perform administrative and support functions as necessary to maintain analytical service.
  • Acquire and maintain analytical proficiency in forensic biology analysis.
  • Maintain effective communication with the scientific and criminal justice communities and Department personnel.
  • Satisfactory completion in an ISP recognized forensic biology analysis training/testing program.
  • Upon completion of relevant training conduct forensic analysis on routine biological samples of limited complexity and difficulty utilizing approved Unit Test Methods.
  • Work under the direction of a higher-level forensic scientist or supervisor including review of records.
  • Communicate analytical procedures methodology policies and conclusions to various elements in the criminal justice system including court testimony as an expert witness.
  • Participate in a proficiency testing program.
  • Assist in preventative maintenance of laboratory instruments and safety equipment.
  • Participate in continuing education and training programs in the analysis of biological samples.
  • Comply with StandardOperatingProceduresRulesRegulationsandLaboratorypolicies.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Job Qualifications


  • Baccalaureate degree or higher in biology chemistry and/or forensic science which shall include a minimum of college credit in each of the following four subject areas: Genetics Biochemistry Molecular Biology and Statistics.
  • Knowledge of theory and practical operation of various scientific instrumentation and analytical techniques.
  • Ability to perform complex scientific procedures in an unbiased manner following the Unit Test Methods.
  • Ability to comprehend demonstrate and explain knowledge of the theory and practical operation of various scientific instruments and analytical techniques.
  • Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to adhere to established laboratory safety practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to testify as an expert witness in an objective unbiased and professional manner.
  • Must be able to differentiate colors as evidenced by medical certification.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license.
  • Ability to travel by aircraft and other vehicles.
  • Ability to attend training at alternate locations for extended periods of time.
