Leidos is seeking a Business Analyst within the SA Contract at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Pittsburgh PA. NETL is a multi-disciplinary scientific and technical-oriented national laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energys primary lab supporting fossil fuel-based energy research. The objective of the Business Analyst is to gather and analyze business requirements and data to improve systems processes and products within the research support framework. This role involves communicating with stakeholders generating reports with actionable recommendations conducting data analysis using various tools and developing strategies aligned with organizational goals.
This work will involve a multidisciplinary scientific and technically oriented national laboratory team alongside other data scientists engineers geologists and computer scientists that produces technological solutions for Americas energy challenges. NETL develops technological solutions to address Americas energy challenges supporting homegrown energy initiatives stimulating a growing economy and improving the health safety and security of all Americans. Highly skilled professionals at three NETL research sites Albany OR Morgantown WV and Pittsburgh PA conduct a broad range of research activities that support DOEs mission to advance the national economic and energy security of the United States.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Strategic Process Optimization & Innovation:
- Lead the analysis of current business processes to identify inefficiencies bottlenecks and areas for strategic improvement.
- Design and propose optimized future-state processes translating complex operational challenges into actionable technical and business solutions.
- Drive process enhancements for research data management project planning and cost management transitioning from manual methods to integrated streamlined systems.
- Evaluate existing systems and services recommending changes to enhance efficiency reduce costs and align with strategic organizational goals.
- Identify and integrate opportunities for advanced technologies including AI to optimize workflows improve data utilization and enhance research support functions.
- Actively participate in the evaluation and beta testing of novel technical solutions.
- Requirements Management & System Solutions:
- Elicit analyze and thoroughly document functional and technical requirements from diverse stakeholders (e.g. research scientists project managers administrative staff) to define clear project scope and objectives.
- Connect identified business system solutions to existing processes developing new processes or integrating existing tools within the current technological ecosystem.
- Overlay business system solutions with current data leverage and movement to ensure seamless integration and operational effectiveness.
- Data Analysis & Insight Generation:
- Gather analyze and interpret complex datasets related to operational performance research activities and financial metrics.
- Utilize databases advanced data analysis techniques and data visualization tools to derive actionable insights and support data-driven decision-making.
- Translate business operations and data movement into precise data requirements and process needs.
- Develop and maintain detailed reports dashboards and financial models (e.g. for budgeting forecasting variance analysis) to communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders and leadership.
- Stakeholder Engagement & Communication:
- Act as a crucial liaison between various departments (e.g. research business operations IT) to ensure consistent alignment and information dissemination.
- Facilitate interviews workshops and meetings to foster consensus among stakeholders and ensure effective solution adoption.
- Provide expert guidance and serve as a subject matter expert for business processes developing forward-thinking solutions that promote increased efficiency and productivity.
Requirements:
- Bachelors degree in a STEM field Business Administration Information Systems or a related discipline with 8 years of relevant business analysis experience; or a masters degree in a STEM field Business Administration Information Systems or a related discipline with 6 years of relevant business analysis experience.
- Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills with a proven ability to solve complex business problems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills capable of articulating technical information to non-technical audiences and vice versa.
- Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation including strong technical skills in SQL and Excel.
- Experience with documentation and requirement gathering methodologies.
- Familiarity with business intelligence tools and data visualization techniques.
- Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL campus.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working as a Business Operations Analyst or Scientific Business Analyst in a research scientific or energy sector environment.
- Familiarity with project management methodologies (e.g. Agile Scrum) and tools.
- Knowledge of specific regulatory requirements or operational nuances within the energy or federal research sector.
- Experience with Business Process Management (BPM) methodologies (e.g. Six Sigma Lean).
- Demonstrated ability to assess and integrate emerging technologies such as AI for process optimization.
- An eye for efficiency optimization and potential integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into business processes.
- A strong comfort level with novel technology and technical solutions within an existing organizational ecosystem.
