Thurston County Public Works is recruiting for four (4) Maintenance Techniciansto join our dynamic energetic and innovativeRoad Operationsteam. The successful candidates will have experience operating specialized road maintenance equipment and performing varied work in maintenance construction and other department activities as a crew member or independently as required.
Essential functions may include but are not limited to the following:
- Performs labor associated with maintenance repair and construction of roadway systems including:
- Roadway/shoulder maintenance
- Construction
- Drainage
- Traffic control
- Mowing and vegetation control
- Bridge maintenance and construction
- Snow/ice removal and control
- Operates a variety of highway maintenance construction equipment such as but not limited to:
- Tilt/ramp trailer
- Street sweeper
- 10 yd. dump truck
- 58-ton roller
- Pup trailer
- Medium size wheel loader
- Snowplow
- Brush chipper/truck
- Crack sealer
- Sander truck
- Controls traffic by flagging to guide traffic through work sites.
- Lubricates and performs minor mechanical equipment repairs.
- Assists in construction maintenance and repair of buildings structures and equipment.
- Installs and maintains traffic control signs and road markings.

Essential Personnel:This position is considered to be an essential worker and may be required to work during non-business hours or closures in order to meet operational requirements and needs such as clearing roads during a snow and ice event.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work Environment - Performs the majority of duties outdoors exposed to a variety of weather conditions. Employee risks physical hazard from heavy equipment traffic and exposure to fumes paints solvents pesticides noise and other hazardous/dangerous materials. Physical effort is required due to heavy lifting frequently in excess of 50 lbs. and working in confined or cramped sites.
- Schedule - A regular full-time workweek shall normally consist of forty (40) hours within a seven (7) day period. The schedule may consist of eight (8) nine (9) or ten (10) hours of actual time worked or compensated per a twenty-four (24) hour period. Other schedules may be established with notice.
- Travel Requirements - Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings or trainings.
- Customer Interactions - Daily interactions with Thurston County staff and the public.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Two years of road construction maintenance or equipment operating experience.
- A valid Washington State Class A Commercial Drivers License with air brake and tanker endorsements and without a manual restriction. A special endorsement for tanker must be obtained within six months of hire date.
- A valid First Aid Card (or one must be obtained within three months of hire date).
- Must possess a Washington Traffic Flagging Card or obtain one within six (6) months of employment.
- Employee must meet certification requirement of departmental equipment training program for Maintenance Technician within probationary period of employment.
DESIRED SKILLS:
- Ability to operate road construction equipment.
- Ability to make minor mechanical repairs on equipment used in road maintenance and construction.
- Ability to install traffic control signs.
