Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:

The Thrift Store Associate provides service to customers sorts incoming products and assists the Manager in the maintenance of all store operations.

KEY Accountabilities:

  • Willingness to work within the mission vision & values of The Salvation Army
  • Use a client-centered approach by consistently demonstrating compassion respect and empathy
  • Contributes to meeting store sales budgets by maintaining customer service standards
  • Implements store layout plans to attract customers including merchandise displays; ensures attractiveness of the store through Tidy Maintenance
  • Replenishes inventory levels based on Managers directions
  • Processes donated household items by unloading sorting packing storing and loading donated items
  • Sorts donated clothing by judging the condition of the items
  • Routes donated items to the appropriate destination (store distribution recycling rag out trash)
  • Hang and price good condition clothing
  • Contributes to the control of inventory by retrieving sorting and pricing as per directions; protects the store from inventory shrinkage by close visual monitoring
  • Takes responsibility for the accurate completion of all customer transactions including visa debit etc.
  • Contributes to the safety of staff and customers (e.g. snow removal clear fire exits no obstacles inside/outside store cleans spillage and maintains store cleanliness)
  • Attends staff meetings
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of moderate to severe injury or illnesses due to:

Physical attacks by others

Exposure to infectious diseases

Exposure to toxic chemicals (e.g. toxic spills)

Moving objects

Sharp objects (e.g. needle pricks)

Electrical hazards

Repetitive strain injuries (e.g. back wrist)

MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Reports directly to Thrift Store Manager
  • Direct reports: None

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

Has responsibility for cash float safe code access keys & donation receiving

Working Conditions:

The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Handle garbage
  • Isolation and monotony
  • Odours
  • Dealing with angry people
  • Verbal abuse
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals
  • Various weather conditions
  • CHANGE ROOM garbage WHICH MAY INCLUDE HUMAN WASTE

education and experience Qualifications:

The successful job applicant will have completed Public School and/or High School.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience including life skills and general familiarity with customer service and cash handling.

Skills and Capabilities

  • High attention and accuracy when operating Squirrel Till
  • Heavy lifting: able to life up to 25 pounds regularly
  • Ability to stand for long periods
  • Universal precautions.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion (i.e. The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $17.85 to $18.76 with a maximum of $22.51.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
