Environmental Specialist Land Revitalization Program

Pay Grade(s): 9 ($30.26 DOE)

Purpose: The Environmental Specialist will support and coordinate environmental projects primarily within the Land Revitalization Program including solid waste management greenhouse gas reduction initiatives and the Tribal Response Program. This role involves assisting with grants and projects that advance the establishment of a regional recycling hub expand composting initiatives across Southeast Alaska and contribute to the assessment cleanup and inventory of brownfield sites. The position will also provide technical and administrative support for other environmental initiatives within tribal villages and the Environmental Division.

Essential Functions. An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Project Support for Land Revitalization Program: Assist with the implementation and coordination of projects related to solid waste management composting and brownfield remediation under the Land Revitalization Program.

  • Grant and Project Assistance: Provide administrative and technical support to ensure successful execution of Environmental Division projects including budget tracking scheduling and reporting in alignment with funding agency requirements.

  • Program and Budget Monitoring: Support the monitoring of program budgets and funding compliance assisting with the preparation of financial reports and updates for various funding sources.

  • Outreach and Education Support: Contribute to public outreach and educational initiatives promoting tribal and community engagement with environmental programs and raising awareness of key issues.

  • Interagency Coordination: Collaborate with local regional state and national partners to support the development and implementation of tribal environmental services and guidelines.

  • Stakeholder Communication: Maintain effective communication with tribal communities and stakeholders providing input to support program planning and development.

  • Grant Writing Assistance: Support the research development and preparation of grant applications to secure funding for environmental projects.

  • Other Duties as Assigned: Perform additional tasks as needed to support the Environmental Divisions objectives and priorities.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities. A comprehensive set of capabilities required to perform job tasks effectively:

  • Expertise in federal state and environmental program regulations particularly in waste management and land revitalization.

  • Ability to develop and implement complex environmental program/projects.

  • Ability to work effectively with local state and federal agencies and tribes.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for outreach public education and grant writing.

  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Basic financial management knowledge including grant budgeting and reporting.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant software.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Ability to travel using all forms of commercial transportation.

Minimum Qualifications (education experience skills):

  • Associates degree

  • 2 years experience at the technician level or above in an environmental field

  • Additional education in the environmental field may be substituted for experience and additional experience in the environmental field may be substituted for education.

  • Must be 21 years of age with a Valid Alaska Drivers license

Preferred Qualifications (education experience skills):

  • Experience assisting in environmental programs particularly in sustainable waste management and brownfield land remediation.

  • Familiarity with composting and recycling equipment and procedures.

  • Familiarity with the Tlingit and Haida cultures; contemporary traditional political social.

Physical Requirements. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary requiring routine walking standing bending and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs.

Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:

  • Some travel may be required on small aircraft or ferry.

  • Certain positions at Tlingit and Haida may have exposure to certain hazardous materials or conditions. The supervisor will review these if applicable.
