The Senior Safety Specialist is a professional/supervisory level class which supervises other Safety Specialists and participates in the administration of the Countywide Safety Program within a County department. This class is characterized by a high degree of independence in the application of program responsibilities and requires a thorough knowledge of applicable laws procedures and regulations affecting safety operations.

Examples of Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of

  • Principles and practices of supervision to include team dynamics and team building leadership mentoring etc.
  • Principles and practices of public administration organization and management.
  • Local State and Federal laws regulations and codes affecting the safety and occupational health activities for which responsible.
  • Principles techniques and statistical methods used in accident prevention programs.
  • Equipment used in environmental monitoring and determination of employee exposure.
  • Construction related work hazards and abatement techniques.
  • Methods of effective training and information exchange.
  • A variety of computer software applications such as word processing spreadsheet and database programs.
Ability to
  • Research analyze and make recommendations on safety and occupational health issues.
  • Organize and direct the work of a safety and occupational health program staff.
  • Write reports in a logical comprehensive and concise manner.
  • Acquire subject matter expertise in the functions and activities of the department including but not limited to laws rules regulations procedures and technical operations.
  • Effectively represent the organization to other County agencies/departments/divisions and other organizations involved in safety and occupational health.
  • Make effective oral and written presentations of conclusions and recommendations.
  • Handle public contact with tact and judgment.
  • Maintain evaluate and utilize technical and administrative reports.
  • Effectively investigate and analyze accidents and implement/recommend appropriate corrective actions.

Employment Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Either:1.Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors Degree in safety engineering industrial engineering occupational safety and health or other closely related field AND two years of experience providing safety and/or occupational health guidance to managers and supervisors in an industrial setting or in an operation involving high potential for accident/injury.

Or: 2. Two years of full-time experience in the Sacramento County class of Safety Specialist or performing equivalent duties in the County.

Note:If the word experience is referenced in the minimum qualifications it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.

General Qualifications

License Requirement: Possession of a valid Class C or higher California Drivers License is required prior to appointment. Failure to maintain the appropriate drivers license may constitute cause for disciplinary action. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Shift Weekend and Holiday Work: Accidents may happen at any time day or night. Employees in these positions may be called in to investigate an accident or to resolve an unsafe condition or practice at any time.

Physical Requirements: Stoop and kneel climb stairs and ladders; walk on uneven terrain and muddy fields and climb into and out of confined spaces in order to conduct inspections; work around dust dirt noise and odors; wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment; work in adverse weather conditions; may be required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Probationary Period

The probationary period for this classification is twelve(12)months.

FORMULA RATE EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%)

All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications by the cut-off date will have their Supplemental Questionnaire scored in the Formula Rate Examination.

This examination will evaluate the relevance level recency progression and quality of candidates education training and experience. The candidates application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore the candidates responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough detailed and complete. The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.

All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their inbox. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination.
