The Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at CSUF is a leader in the region in researching and analyzing Chicana/o and Latina/o histories contributions and experiences. We are dedicated to faculty progress toward tenure. Faculty in the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies have various opportunities to apply for travel professional development research creative activities and programming funding including college-level funding Ethnic Studies Requirement and the Mellon Foundation Latinx Lab for Storytelling and Social Justice Grant. The department has commitments in Orange County with proximity to thriving grassroots and working-class artistic cultural hubs such as Anaheim and Santa Ana.

Position
The Department of Chicana/o Studies at California State University Fullerton invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with appointment to begin Fall 2026. We seek a specialist in the interdisciplinary study of Chicanx and Latinx visual culture and immigration.

CSUF faculty are committed teacher/scholars who bring research and creative discovery to students in the classroom. The successful candidate will be expected to teach broadly within their departments curriculum mentor students and serve on departmental and university-wide committees. The primary responsibilities of the person in this position will include developing and teaching introductory core and Ethnic Studies Requirement courses in the discipline as well as developing courses in their area(s) of specialization. This person will also be responsible for producing scholarship and/or equivalent creative activities commensurate with the Department Personal Standards requirements for tenure.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies Chicana/o Studies or related fields with an interdisciplinary study of visual culture and immigration (ABDs may apply but must show evidence that the degree will be completed by the appointment date)
  • Demonstrated or potential excellence in undergraduate teaching
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with students from intersecting marginalized social groups
  • A strong record of scholarly and/or creative accomplishments appropriate to the level of appointment
  • Experience in working collaboratively with colleagues and communities
  • Ability to balance excellent teaching scholarship/creative activity and service

Preferred Qualification

  • Ability to teach and build curriculum in lower and upper-division courses focused on visual culture and immigration with an emphasis in Latinx and Central American Studies
  • Evidence of effective use of a variety of instructional methods and learning modalities
  • Commitment to cocurricular activities and engagement with campus and regional communities

The College and Department
The Chicana and Chicano Studies Department at California State University Fullerton is an interdisciplinary department that offers a B.A. in Ethnic Studies with an Option in Chicana/o Studies as well as a Minor in Chicana/o Studies. The curriculum offers over 30 interdisciplinary courses many of which fulfill university-wide electives and general education requirements including the Ethnic Studies requirement. The department averages approximately 100 majors and minors per year and graduates around 15 majors annually. Centering the histories contributions and lived experiences of Chicanx and Latinx communities in the United States and transnationally our mission is to cultivate critical thinkers knowledge producers and community leaders who enact joyful and just alternative futures rooted in Chicanx/Latinx ways of knowing. Students who take our course offerings will learn to apply theories and concepts in Chicanx/Latinx Studies to identify analyze and challenge systems of oppression as well as contest normative thinking through scholarship creative expression and social action. The Department is housed within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (H&SS) which offers students the breadth of a traditional liberal arts education while preparing them to be members of a global society participating in an extensive array of professions or advanced academic or professional study.

H&SS is the largest college at CSUF offering 23 undergraduate degrees 38 minors and 15 graduate mission is to educate students to be culturally globally socially historically and environmentally astute civically responsible alumni able to navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world. Three primary initiatives in the College of Humanities and Social SciencesCoJET Passage to the Future and IBIIshowcase our core pillars of civic engagement social justice and global awareness. Our faculty-based Collective for Justice Equity & Transformation (CoJET) consists of H&SS faculty fellows whose expertise addresses equity diversity justice community and organizational transformation. Faculty teaching our Passage to the Future courses help position our students for success by helping them connect H&SS experiences and knowledge to career paths. The Institute of Black Intellectual Innovation (IBII) is a cross-campus and community-minded initiative to institutionalize the support and inclusion of Black people culture creative arts and intellectual history at California State University Fullerton and throughout Orange County.

Compensation
The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $6221 to $13224 monthly (12 monthly payments per academic year). The anticipated hiring range is $7465 to $7608 per month.

Salary offered is commensurate with experience and addition the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work ( research grants moving expenses start-up funds and a reduced teaching load may be available.
