The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seekinga Transportation Engineer 2 to provide essential drafting and technical support within the Geotechnical Office for statewide transportation this role you will create detailed engineering drawings using advanced design and drafting software while assisting Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists. The position is responsible for managing boring log data from field collection through final production and supporting geotechnical analyses and testing programs. This work directly contributes to WSDOTs mission by ensuring soil and rock conditions are accurately evaluated to support safe sustainable and resilient transportation infrastructure.


What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role the Transportation Engineer 2 will:

  • Prepare detailed engineering drawings and geotechnical report figures using OpenRoads MicroStation and other CADD software.
  • Generate soil profiles data plots geologic cross sections and PS&E-supporting drawings for bridges walls landslides and roadway excavations.
  • Analyze geotechnical and drilling reports boring logs and geologic data to support development of subsurface models.
  • Import edit finalize and manage boring log data and CPT data within gINT and related geotechnical databases.
  • Coordinate with project managers and laboratory staff to review and revise draft boring logs and integrate laboratory test data.
  • Perform geotechnical analyses draft technical recommendations and support review of contractor submittals site visits and report preparation.
  • Provide software support and training for tools such as gINT DIRT OpenRoads MicroStation and GIS applications.
  • Prepare basic GIS maps figures and exhibits and maintain GIS compatibility with geotechnical datasets and drawing products.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity the following are required:

  • Geotechnical Engineering Knowledge: Ability to apply geotechnical engineering concepts and processes to support project design; interpret test boring data laboratory results and subsurface information to provide recommendations aligned with WSDOT standards.
  • Engineering Design Software and GIS Expertise: Prior experience in using Bentley OpenRoads Designer and MicroStation Connect to produce accurate scaled engineering drawings such as cross sections and profiles. Ability to troubleshoot and refine CAD deliverables to ensure clarity and compliance with standards.
  • GIS and Spatial Data Visualization: Applied knowledge of geospatial principles and ESRI ArcGIS to create figures and maps that clearly communicate subsurface and environmental conditions. Ability to integrate multiple datasets and ensure deliverables are consistent with project and reporting requirements.
  • Technical Communication:Excellent communication skills with the ability to prepare clear and concise technical reports boring logs laboratory summaries and figures. Skills to communicate effectively with engineers project managers and external offices to ensure understanding of geotechnical information.
  • Geotechnical Software and Data Analysis: Ability to learn and use geotechnical software such as gINT and OpenGround to organize and manage field and laboratory test data. Ability to learn analyze and interpret CPT CSL and other geophysical data to support engineering design recommendations.
  • Quality Assurance and Attention to Detail: Ability to review CAD drawings boring logs and testing data for accuracy and consistency. Identify and correct errors to ensure accuracy and completeness of deliverables.
  • Project Coordination and Time Management: Skills to manage multiple assignments prioritize work and meet deadlines in a dynamic project environment. Ability to adjust to shifting project needs while maintaining quality and accountability in deliverables.
  • Digital Literacy and GIS Mapping: Experience using MS Office Suite (Excel Access Word Outlook PowerPoint) to organize and communicate data.
  • Growth Mindset:Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented:Takes action to meet the needs of others.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Professional Preparation: Demonstrated foundational knowledge of civil and geotechnical engineering through completion of geotechnical and soil mechanics courses specialized training Engineer-in-Training certification or equivalent professional experience.
  • Geotechnical Software: Prior experience utilizing and managing gINT or similar platforms to develop boring logs managing lab and field data and producing reliable geotechnical databases.
  • Data Analysis and Interpretation: Foundational knowledge and prior experience in analyzing boring logs lab test results CPT plots and CSL data to identify subsurface conditions. Skills to provide clear data-driven recommendations that support engineering decisions.
  • Project Controls: Skills to support project scheduling and controls.
  • Advanced GIS Mapping: Ability to independently apply ESRI ArcGIS to integrate complex datasets produce detailed maps and develop figures that enhance geotechnical reports and presentations for diverse audiences.
