Job Summary

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking Patient Care Technicians in the Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapies Unit (3JCP) to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses. This unit is part of the Medical Surgical Services (MSS) Division.

This brand new state-of-the-art 24-bed unit is part of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and houses the only blood and marrow transplant unit in Iowa. The unit is a dynamic and fast-paced environment rich with opportunities for both the new graduate nurse and the experienced nurse looking for new challenges. Specialized comprehensive care is provided to adult patients with leukemia and patients undergoing transplant for multiple myeloma leukemia lymphoma and other types of hematologic for these patients is a holistic and dynamic process that is both challenging and stimulating. Essential to the care of these inspiring patients is our interdisciplinary team that is skilled in oncology care. Exceptional care of the oncology patient embodies excellent clinical skills intertwined with compassionate care to achieve optimum outcomes.

This units vision is to provide expertise in quality patient/family-centered care for every patient every time. Our team achieves this through competence character and communication. A primary responsibility of this team is to provide care that will assist the patients to cope with the physiological and psychological components of their illness. This unit offers an energizing and healthy work environment that allows staff to thrive and grow both personally and professionally. This program has been accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) since 2001 and through a multidisciplinary teamwork approach was awarded the Silver Beacon Award for Excellence in 2016 by the American Association of Critical Care nurses (AACN).

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature pulse respiration and blood pressure.
  • Carries out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including but not limited to phlebotomy peripheral IV removal & Foley catheter removal and cares for patients who are medically isolated.
  • Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas preoperative preparation of the skin dressing changes collecting specimens applying binders braces etc.
  • Performs special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge including but not limited to phlebotomy ECG lead/12 lead placement and brace/pin site cares.
  • Assists with patient admission transfers and discharges.
  • Directly provides for patients personal hygiene and comfort.
  • Turns positions and ambulates patients.
  • Transports patients equipment specimens and supplies.
  • Feeds patients serves drinking water and nourishments and records patients intake.
  • Assists patients with bedpans and urinals and records output.
  • Participates in nursing care conferences; reports pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge.
  • Provides for patient comfort measures through social interactions.
  • Shares responsibility for preparation proper use and care of equipment and supplies and for neatness and cleanliness of unit.
  • May assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurse.
  • Cleans areas per designated guidelines and standards demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants cleaning products and care of the housekeeping equipment
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.

Percent of Time: 50% 20 hours per week
Schedule: Day shifts (0700-1530) weekend and holiday rotation
Location: University of Iowa Health Care University Campus Colloton Pavilion (3JCP)
Salary: Merit Pay Plan
