Summary

St. Margarets School (SMS) is Western Canadas only girl-centered independent day and boarding school located in Victoria British Columbia Canada on the unceded traditional territories of the Esquimalt Nations Songhees Nations and WSÁNEĆ Nations. Founded in 1908 SMS is an international centre for girl-centered learning and leadership development providing empowering education for girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (boarding grades 712). St. Margarets School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) School offering the Diploma Programme and we are a candidate school for the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).

The International Baccalaureate Librarian is an innovative educational leader who oversees a future-focused JK12 library program that promotes literacy inquiry and digital learning across all IB programmes (PYP MYP and DP). As a key instructional partner the IB Librarian leads the integration of information literacy digital citizenship research skills and emerging technologies into classroom learning. This role requires a visionary educator who can inspire a culture of reading support authentic inquiry and guide both students and faculty in navigating an evolving information landscape.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership & Program Development

  • Provide strategic leadership for a JK12 library program aligned with IB philosophy school values and long-term instructional goals.
  • Lead the development and implementation of a vertically aligned information literacy and research skills curriculum.
  • Mentor faculty in embedding inquiry and literacy in units of inquiry subject courses and interdisciplinary projects.
  • Serve as a champion for equitable access to information intellectual freedom and global perspectives.
  • Participate actively in school curriculum committees and IB programme evaluations.

Literacy & Learning Innovation

  • Drive initiatives that promote a culture of reading including literacy events author visits reading challenges and diverse book collections.
  • Design differentiated literacy experiences to support early learners reluctant readers multilingual students and advanced readers.
  • Cultivate students academic honesty ethical research habits and strong comprehension skills from JK through Grade 12.
  • Lead professional development on literacy instruction academic integrity and inquiry-based pedagogy.
  • Coordinate the SSST program for DP students.

Technology Integration

  • Design manage and adapt the systems of the library in order to energize and support what other educators and learners do with the curriculum.
  • Guide students and teachers in the effective use of digital tools for research collaboration and creative expression.
  • Integrate AI literacy media literacy and digital citizenship across grade levels ensuring safe and responsible use of technology.
  • Manage access to digital databases e-books and research platforms that support IB curriculum requirements.
  • Collaborate with IT and instructional technology teams to evaluate and implement emerging technologies that enrich learning.
  • Provide training for faculty on technology-enhanced research digital workflows and innovation tools.

Student Research Support

  • Support PYP inquiry cycles MYP research projects and DP Extended Essays with high-quality developmentally appropriate instruction.
  • Offer workshops research consultations and academic honesty support for students across the school.
  • Guide students in navigating complex digital information environments using critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.

Library Management & Collection Development

  • Develop collections that reflect the communitys needs and objectives for personal academic or professional learning multiliteracies and language development.
  • Sustain a diverse inclusive and globally minded collection of print and digital resources.
  • Apply data-informed practices to evaluate acquire and deselect materials.
  • Oversee library operations budgets schedules and spaces to ensure a welcoming safe and innovative learning environment.
  • Develop policies and workflows that ensure efficient circulation and equitable access to resources.

Community Engagement

  • Engage families and caregivers in supporting literacy and responsible technology use at home.
  • Survey the school community to address needs for content and activities related to learning and teaching.
  • Communicate library initiatives resources and digital tools clearly to students staff and parents.
  • Build partnerships with authors local libraries community organizations and global learning networks.

Required Education & Experience

  • Completion of Bachelor of Education and current BC Teaching Certificate
  • IB training or experience in PYP MYP or DP (an asset).
  • Minimum three years experience in the role of Teacher-Librarian overseeing the daily operational and strategic needs of the school library.
  • Experience leading and working in the areas of STEM and ADST.
  • Recent experience teaching digital literacy and ADST.
  • Experience in a JK12 or IB school setting (preferred).
  • Demonstrated success in leading reading initiatives inquiry programs or tech integration.
  • Proficiency with library management systems (such as Follet) digital research tools and educational technologies.

Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated expertise in literacy development research instruction and digital/media literacy.
  • Membership of a professional Library organization (e.g. CLA CFLA ALA).
  • Leadership abilities that inspire innovation and collaborative practice.
  • Strong knowledge of IB learner attributes ATLs and inquiry-based pedagogy.
  • Recent and ongoing professional development in the areas of current library and information services technology and media services resources and activities.
  • Ability to appraise and evaluate library materials to ensure a well-balanced up-to-date stock which meets the curricular and recreational needs of all readers.
  • Familiarity with various teaching resources including where appropriate digital tools and artificial intelligence to support and enhance teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development including inquiry-based and project-based learning approaches.
  • A love of books and a desire to inspire students to read.
  • Strong administrative organizational and IT skills including robotics equipment and website development.
  • A good command of written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and to build strong relationships with all members of the school community.
