The flight nurse is a registered nurse (RN) who is a clinical expert in an area of specialty; such as emergency medicine neonatal intensive care pediatric intensive care and maternal specialty care.Job Description
Able to demonstrate critical thinking skills and autonomous practice when transporting critical patents and do so under potentially stressful conditions. The flight nurse will administer critical care nursing and treatment and determine the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish priority for required critical care nursing. Will assess the patent while in route to the emergency facility and administer additional care as indicated or given by approved protocols or medical direction. The flight nurse will deliver nursing care to patents prior to and during air and inter-facility and/or scene transport. Ability to tolerate various flight conditions including but not limited to altitude physiology weather conditions working within a pressurized aircraft and needing knowledge of effects on patent. The flight nurse will need to maintain a level of competency in order to remain knowledgeable of the equipment and its usage in the medical transport. Provide standardized patent care hand off to the receiving facility by completing extensive written documentation on patent condition and treatment provided. Knowledgeable and understand all applicable legal moral and ethical issues surrounding the emergency medical service. Maintain communication with the patent and the family comforts and reassures patents and be able to demonstrate concern and courtesy while maintaining confidentiality of the patents information. Flight nurses as outlined by AirMed protocols and will have the opportunity to perform procedures within a hospital setting in various areas including but not limited to trauma codes and critical cases. Hospital setting opportunities will provide additional hands on training in certain areas of focus. Physical activities may require considerable use of arms and legs and moving of whole body; such as climbing lifting balancing walking stooping and handling materials. Flight Nurses will be required to attend training classes to maintain any specialty certifications state licensure and keep abreast of new developments in the field or maintain existing addition to training classes the flight nurse will be required to obtain knowledge and perform advanced procedures and skills as outlined by AirMed protocols and maintain a high level of competency. Assist with teaching and educating others in patent care air ambulance safety courses helicopter landing etc. Must be able to maintain a body weight of no more than 240 pounds. Depending on location of position work hours will vary depending on patent needs. This may include overtime call backup call nights days weekends and holidays.Qualifications
Graduate from a nationally accredited nursing program preferred including but not limited to Commission on CollegiateNursing Education (CCNE) Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and National League for NursingCommission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA).
