Job Summary
Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) has the primary responsibility for assuring the technical adequacy and accuracy of the companys radiation protection program and has continuing responsibility for surveillance and supervisory action in the enforcement of the program. The RSO will manage training and supervision of radiation protection program staff in accordance with company policies and procedures. This position will also manage and implement site-specific environment health and safety policies and procedures safety management systems and training programs.
Key Responsibilities
Radiation Safety
Perform radiation surveys using specialized equipment to identify and quantify radiation levels
Monitor radiation exposure of employees and implement control measures to reduce exposure
Develop and maintain radiation safety procedures to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and licenses
Provide radiation safety training to employees contractors and visitors
Maintain and calibrate radiation detection equipment
Provide immediate response to radiation emergencies and incidents
Conduct radiological surveys of facilities
Knowledge and understanding of the regulatory requirements for facility compliance with radiation protection regulations including preparation of reports
Ensure all monitoring sampling audits and reporting activities are performed following schedules established within the facility radioactive materials license
Assist with regulatory inspections and comprise reporting for regulatory communication
Periodically conduct audits of the companys facilities to identify safety health and environmental risks
Assist the Radiation Safety Officer with investigation of all safety health and environmental incidents at the companys facilities
Manage facility by-product materials storage and shipments
Accurately manage health safety and environmental data within company database
Occupational Safety
Integrate site-specific and corporate environment health and safety policies management systems and programs with the aim of continuing improvement
Evaluate and monitor facilities to ensure compliance with governmental and company requirements and to minimize risks to environment health and safety
Train and equip employees with the understanding skills and facilities to achieve an injury free and healthy workplace
Educate employees on practices to improve the environment wellness and safety on the job
Provide information and training for the safe handling use transport and disposal of materials
Conduct regular environmental health and safety and emergency preparedness audits and implement action plans with company employees and contractors
Identify significant health or safety risks through hazard identification (job hazard analysis) develop shall establish specific written safe work programs/procedures to ensure that operations associated with the risk can be carried out safely
Management of on-site contractors to implement practices consistent with companys environment health and safety policies and procedures
Manage investigations of all safety health and environmental incidents at the companys facilities
Accurately manage health safety and environmental data within company database and provide periodic reports for management.
Education Experience & Skill Requirements
The Radiation Safety Officer must meet and maintain the ability to meet the qualification as a Radiation Safety Officer under Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Radiation Protection Regulations. This position requires a bachelors degree in a physical or biological science industrial hygiene health physics radiation protection or engineering from an accredited college or university or an equivalent combination of training and relevant experience with two years of relevant experience equivalent to a year of academic study from a uranium or mineral extraction/recovery radioactive waste processing or a radioactive waste or by-product material disposal facility.
