About Afrika Outbound

Afrika Outbound uses experiential learning and travel as tools to bring people together through history cultural connections and shared stories. Our programs use Black/Afro-Caribbean/African histories as a catalyst for community-building and allyship across and beyond the diaspora.

We believe in the power of travel for reflection and collective action. Rooted in Afro/Africentric values our approach connects youth and young adults with global stories of the diaspora where they learn to use their knowledge talents lived experiences and leadership potential to inspire positive impact in their communities.

As we grow we are seeking board members who are passionate about travel youth development cultural education and community impact and who want to help guide Afrika Outbound into its next chapter.

Our Mission: Our mission is to help youth and young adults from marginalized communities fully flourish into pioneers of positive change through the exchange of perspectives and ideologies obtained through travel.

Our Vision: To create a truly global world by removing the physical and invisible barriers surrounding outbound travel.

Are you passionate about providing life-changing travel experiences to youth and young adults from marginalized communities that challenge them to rethink their understanding of the world and themselves Do you have experience in fundraising government relations financial management nonprofit governance marketing & communications or youth programming relevant to our work

If so we invite you to apply to join the Board of Directors of Afrika Outbound.

Its an exciting time to join our board! Fresh off wrapping up a 3-year program we are in the process of submitting our charitable status application and building new partnerships. You will have the opportunity to work alongside a small and passionate team sharing your skills and knowledge and experience to help us ensure the long-term sustainability of our organization and deepen our impact.

We are looking to recruit 5 new Board members to fulfill one of the following roles: Chair (1) Vice-Chair (1) Treasurer (1) Secretary (1) & Director at large (1) (to learn more about what the different roles entails click here). We are especially interested in folks who align with our values and have experience in fundraising finance marketing & communications nonprofit governance deep interest in Afrocentric histories and/or in youth programming and curriculum development. We are also hoping to have representation on our Board from the community that we serve so if you are a young person (under 30) and are interested in building community impact we would also love to hear from you!

About the Commitment

  • Lengths of Involvement: A Board Member commits to serve a one-year term. Terms can be renewed.

  • Time commitment: 10 - 15 hours per month. Board meetings are held monthly and virtually on Zoom the 2nd Tuesday in the evening. Committee meetings frequency may vary depending on the committee.

This is a really great opportunity if you:

  • Have a passion for supporting youth and young adults identify as an ally or part of the Afro/African diaspora

  • Are interested in creating expanded opportunities for young people beyond typical youth programming

  • Have the availability and ability to attend board meetings and engage in committee work (fundraising finance etc.)

  • Have strong communication and collaborative skills

Selection & Interview Process

  • Please submit your application through our portal here. You will be asked to submit the following:

  • Your Bio (one or two paragraphs)

  • Your Letter/Video of interest includes:

  • What inspires you to join our Board of Directors

  • The relevant experience and/or skills that you feel you can contribute to Afrika Outbound

  • Your availability to participate in Board meetings and committee meetings

  • Which position(s) on the Board you are interested in (Chair Vice-Chair Treasurer Secretary director-at-large)

  • Applications can be submitted by selecting Apply Now (top or bottom of the page)

  • The deadline to apply is Monday January 5 at 10am ET

  • Virtual interviews via Zoom will be scheduled between January 12 and January 15 2026 with the shortlisted candidates Each interview will be expected to take 45 minutes

  • Shortlisted candidates will receive a calendar invitation with the Zoom link as well as the interview questions (at least 48 hours ahead of their interview)
