Job Duties
The Honorable Doris Henderson Causey of the Court of Appeals Richmond Virginia is seeking applicants for a full-time judicial clerkship starting August 10 2026 for the 2026-2027 term.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive legal research and legislative history.
- Prepare memorandums and other writings analyzing and summarizing appellate briefs and trial records including transcripts pleadings and exhibits.
- Draft court opinions and orders.
- Citation and quote check briefs pleadings judicial opinions and court documents.
- Collaborate closely with the judge fellow law clerks and members of the court.
Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school or membership in good standing of the bar of the Supreme Court of Virginia or the highest court of another state.
- Working knowledge of trial and appellate court procedures systems and rules.
- Applicants should demonstrate excellent analytical writing and editing skills and a working knowledge of legal research (Lexis/Nexis/Westlaw) Bluebook citations Microsoft Office OneDrive Teams and online productivity tools.
Additional Considerations
- Prior legal clerkship or internship experience in criminal civil domestic relations workers compensation administrative agency law and familiarity with the trial and appellate court procedures systems and rules utilized in the Commonwealth of Virginia is a plus but not required.
- Successful candidates must demonstrate an exceptional work ethic and time-management skills be highly organized detail-oriented self-motivated and dependable have a proven ability to digest voluminous materials while meeting critical deadlines and exhibit excellent communication interpersonal teamwork attitude and effective problem-solving skills.
