Job Summary

Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is a 100% employee-owned environmental consulting firm. We plan design permit mitigate and restore for projects across our communities infrastructure systems open spaces and wildlands. We are 50 years strong in 21 offices across California the Pacific Northwest and the Southeastern United States.

ESA is looking for a part-time Senior Data Scientistto join our Fish and Aquatic Sciences team in Northern California. This person has extensive experience implementing advanced analyses of fisheries and aquatic data to inform regulatory requirement and help make management decisions.This position will include serving as a variable part-time professional who implements coupled hydrodynamic and biological modeling acoustic telemetry data processing and analysis (routing and survival) and guidance structure analyses.

Who You Are

  • You are a quantitative-focused fisheries technician/biologist who thrives in modeling hydrodynamic water quality and fisheries data.
  • You have a minimum of 10 years of experience in the fisheries or aquatic biology field.
  • You have a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in the field.
  • You have a minimum of 10 years of professional experience with operating and trailering boats using a wide range of fish and water quality sampling gear and performing light maintenance on sampling gear and equipment.
  • You have experience completing complex fish and hydrodynamic data analyses including acoustic telemetry data processing and analysis.
  • You have experience working on fish guidance structure design development and analysis and report preparation.
  • You have previous experience in analyzing complex data sets using advanced machine learning and statistical approaches.
  • You will thrive in a fast-paced challenging environment and can manage multiple responsibilities and deadlines while working on a team or independently.

You Will Do for ESA

  • As a part-time fisheries biologist your responsibilities will require you to conduct fisheries and water quality investigations on data collected across California.
  • You will assist with study plan development and implementation including describing study objectives data collection analytical approaches analyses and report/manuscript preparation in support of field experiments management actions and habitat restoration.
  • You will lead and support studies primarily involving fish hydrodynamic and water quality data sets.
  • You shall provide excellent time/budget management organizational capabilities attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.
  • You shall collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to help deliver projects on time and within budgeting in a fast-paced work environment.
  • You shall use your experience and critical thinking to select and apply standard techniques methods and procedures for components of a wide range of complex tasks and assignments.

The ESA fish and aquatic sciences practice functionsacross the entire project life cyclefrom strategic planning and permitting to study design and field implementation all the way through to analysis reporting and public outreach. Ourmultidisciplinary expertiseenables us to provide complete and integrated fisheries and aquatic sciences services. This includes use ofadvanced technologies to solve some of the most complex scientific and regulatory challenges. We have a team of 18 fish biologists based out of Northern California that complete field investigations throughout the state of California

ESA has established multiple pay ranges tailored to the economic factors in the geographies in which ESA staff reside. For this position the range is approximately as listed based on our anticipated hiring locations as noted in the above job details. Actual compensation is determined by several factors including but not limited to an individuals related experience education skills and the city in which the applicant lives.
