Salary: $25 - $27 per hour

The Ceramics Technician plays a vital role in supporting the creative and innovative learning environment in the schools art department. We are seeking a skilled organized and collaborative Ceramics Technician to support our dynamic Visual Arts Department.

The ideal candidate is a practicing artist or experienced ceramicist who thrives in a busy studio environment enjoys working with young developing artists and brings strong technical organizational and interpersonal skills to the role. This position plays a key role in maintaining a safe vibrant and inspiring ceramics program ensuring students have the tools materials and support they need to explore and develop their artistic practice.

Hours of work will be Monday to Friday from either 8am - 4pm or 9am - 5pm depending on student scheduling and after school activities.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Firing student work in electric kilns and gas kilns.
  • Recycling used clay with plaster batts mixer and pug mill.
  • Maintaining/mixing/testing glazes and slips.
  • Technical and administrative support for the department.
  • Assisting with student needs as appropriate providing aesthetic and technical guidance.
  • Maintaining kilns potters wheels and other studio equipment.
  • Facilitating student art displays and exhibitions.
  • Photographing studio life student work special events and participating in field trips.
  • Monitoring supply inventory.
  • General studio management: Ware carts potters wheels tools and laundry.
  • Working collaboratively within a dynamic and progressive visual arts department.
  • Foster a collaborative supportive environment that encourages student experimentation and innovation.
  • Maintain a safe clean and organized space that aligns with school policies and health regulations.

Qualifications will include:

  • Current or past practicing artist.
  • Experience working in a shared ceramics studio.
  • Working knowledge of ceramic art and the Visual Arts field.
  • Diploma in Visual Art or BFA BCCT certificate an asset.
  • Calm and focused individual with exceptional executive functioning and attention to detail who is able to work in a busy environment.
  • Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Dynamic and energetic individual who is excited to work in an environment with young developing artists.
  • Self-directed and self-motivated.
  • Physically fit; able to lift 50 pounds regularly.
  • Openness to learning studio processes techniques and systems.
  • Well-organized and attentive to detail.
  • Key competencies and EQ in the following areas: self-awareness self-management empathy social expertness initiative and accountability.
  • BC Teaching Certificate an asset.
