Job Summary

Definition

Definition: Under general supervision of the Assistant Court Administrator maintains order in the court room and within the Community serves a variety of court papers including subpoenas jury notices and notices of hearing. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-exempt and considered a DRIVING position.

Essential Functions: (Essential functions may vary among positions but may include the following tasks knowledge abilities skills and other characteristics. This list of tasks ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification).

Examples of Tasks

1. Serves a variety of Court orders and documents including Notice of Hearing jury notice subpoenas Order to Show Cause writs and other documents to ensure that appropriate Community members are notified in a timely manner that they are required to appear in Court; operates a tribal vehicle within the Community to serve these Court papers.

2. Calls the Court to order and maintains order during the time the Court is in session.

3. Maintains records of documents served time of service and the name of the person on whom the documents were served; checks papers in and out of log in order to track service.

4. Assists the public by answering routine questions about forms procedures petitions in person and on the phone in order to facilitate cooperation and lessen the stress of those unfamiliar with court processes.

5. Provide assistance to individuals who enter the courtroom making certain they follow the rules of behavior the court has established. Escorts juror members to designated areas to be used for deliberations breaks and payment.

6. Establishes and maintains a good public relations association with member of the community including those who may be of assistance in locating Community members by helping create a non-intimidating atmosphere where individuals feel comfortable communicating information.

7. In the absence of Security Guard may be required to assume Security Guard responsibilities such as making sure the court environment is safe from possible dangers. Checking individuals entering the court room to ensure that no weapons or contraband are being brought into the court facility.

8. Prepare the court room prior to court proceedings ensuring that needed amenities are available for the Defense Advocates Prosecutors Plaintiff Defendant Jurors and other participants of the court.

9. Performs other job related duties that enhance and/or facilitate department operations.

Knowledge Skills Abilities and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of the history culture laws rules customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of legal and court terminology.
  • Knowledge of the purpose current issues projects organization policies and employee responsibilities of the division to which assigned.
  • Knowledge of public service techniques as applicable to the operation of a court.

  • Skill in listening well and communicate effectively with Community members and employees having varying educational backgrounds and values.
  • Skill in exercising independent judgment and initiative within established guidelines without close supervision.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with a variety of persons including judges jurors witnesses and other persons involved with the Tribal Court system.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
  • Ability to learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation.
  • Ability to learn legal terminology frequently used in court proceedings.
  • Ability to identify an unsafe situation and take appropriate action.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education & Experience: High school graduation or GED.
  • For enrolled Community members without a GED must obtain a GED. Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.
  • Equivalency - Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job will be considered when filling the position.
  • Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19 Underfill

Special Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Drivers License.
Prior to hire as an employee applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
