The Conservation Impact System Team (IST) in the Chief Conservation Office plays a critical role in supporting global conservation implementation. The IST supports conservation teams leaders and executives to generate and use evidence in adaptive management and reporting so that TNC can achieve its goals for biodiversity climate and people. The IST is comprised of the Conservation Data Team (CDT) and Conservation Strategy Team that partner closely to provide support. The CDT is responsible for conservation data capacity building data quality science & systems and organizational reporting including reporting and recommendations to executives and the global board.
The Director Data Science & Quality advances data quality science and organizational reporting in service of conservation teams leaders and executives who need data to inform management decisions. The Director utilizes advanced techniques modification and practices to provide technical and scientific support and leadership as a subject matter expert (SME) for data quality science and reporting and other related objectives and initiatives. The Director manages a team of staff and partners with others in IST and across TNC to achieve objectives. They are a member of the CDT leadership team that provides overall strategic direction for the CDT.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
Work in a large business unit multi-state/country or division/region wide program.
Manage staff or multi-disciplinary team to create or improve techniques and procedures for complex projects.
Conceive and implement strategic initiatives.
Act as a technical liaison within and outside of the organizational.
Collaborate with a wide range of conservation partners to identify data quality science and reporting needs present technical concepts and support fieldwork.
Provide training for internal and external colleagues on data quality science and reporting principles.
Must work in variable weather conditions at remote locations in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
PhD in natural or social sciences engineering or related field and 2 years related experience.
Supervisory experience.
Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.
Domain area expertise in one or more of the following: large-scale natural protection or management of lands/freshwater/oceans climate or biodiversity policy renewable energy siting natural climate solutions conservation finance and markets regenerative agriculture sustainable fisheries or aquaculture watershed management community-based management equitable conservation
Expert in developing implementing and training staff in data analysis including use of R ArcGIS PowerBI
Experience directing a major program of strategic importance and working with a multi-disciplinary team.
Experience in relationship building with peers partners government agencies land owners academic community etc.
Experience developing maintaining and improving the quality of large and complex databases
Experience fundraising and/or writing grants and research proposals.
Excellent communication skills written spoken and graphical.
PhD in natural or social sciences engineering or related field and 3-5 years related experience.
Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
Experience supporting impact reporting through the design implementation and interpretation of results from data analyses
Experience with developing analyses and communications to leaders executives and board members
Experience with research evaluations using varied data sets and advanced causal-impact statistics
Experience with influencing decisions investments or policies using data data tools and related communications
Experience with monitoring reporting & verification systems for biodiversity and ecosystem services or ecosystem markets
Strong knowledge of common software applications.
Ability to diagnose complex problems and identify solutions.
Ability to manage a budget to ensure sound financial performance.
This position may be based in any country where TNC has an established entity taking into consideration legal restrictions such as non-national ratios and immigration processing times. For U.S. based applicants only the starting pay range for this position is generally within the range of $96850 - $146500 for annual base salary and is based on location qualifications specific skills and experience. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. For all other applicants pay ranges will be in local currency the pay range will be based on the local labor market and not tied to the above pay range. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment and used to determine your actual pay range. Additionally for all applicants actual pay will fall within a range based on a variety of factors including for example the candidates qualifications specific skills and experience.
