Atrium Health Levine Childrens is initiating a search for an accomplished physician scientist (MD or MD/PhD) specializing in pediatric sarcoma research and treatment. The successful candidate will lead the Pediatric Oncology Research Laboratory (PORL) focusing on advancing new therapies for pediatric sarcoma patients. This role requires both a strong research background and includes limited clinical duties offering a unique opportunity to impact patient care and translational science.
About the Laboratory
- Established in 2020 at Cannon Research Center the PORL provides a modern and collaborative environment for pediatric cancer research.
- The lab is equipped with advanced technology including a Helios Mass Cytometer (CyTOF) supporting innovative studies in tumor immune microenvironment tumor heterogeneity stem cell biology and immunotherapy.
- Additional resources include IVIS in vivo imaging Incucyte S3 real-time cell imager and full cell culture and western blot capabilities.
About the Role
- The Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders program at Atrium Health Levine Childrens in Charlotte NC is recruiting an established physician scientist (MD or MD/PhD) for the Isabella Santos Foundation (ISF) Endowed Professorship for Pediatric Cancer Research. Three to five years initial full salary and basic/translational research support are available for an experienced researcher to advance new therapies for pediatric sarcoma patients. The incumbent will lead the Levine Childrens Pediatric Oncology Research Laboratory (PORL) and will represent the department as a member of the NCI-designated Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center (WFBCCC) and as a faculty member of the Wake Forest School of Medicine (WFSM) (at the Associate or Full Professor levels).
- The PORL is particularly well equipped to advance basic/translational studies of pediatric sarcoma tumor immune microenvironments tumor heterogeneity / stem cell biology and immunotherapy. The PORL has a dedicated Helios Mass Cytometer (CyTOF) and experienced CyTOF staff IVIS in vivo imaging system and affiliated in-building vivarium facilities Incucyte S3 real-time cell imager and full cell culture facilities.
- The Levine Childrens PORL hosts a pediatric sarcoma biospecimen repository and staff are experienced in multi-center biobanking efforts.
- Levine Childrens is the headquarters for the ARISE Consortium which unites pediatric oncology programs from across North and South Carolina and is a full member of the Sunshine Consortium the PTCTC and other national clinical trial consortia that focus on pediatric sarcoma treatment and immunotherapy offering multiple unique opportunities for translational research efforts in pediatric sarcoma.
- The ISF Endowed Professor for Pediatric Cancer Research will join the Wake Forest School of Medicine faculty as well as the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center and a vast institutional collaborative network including investigators with expertise in immunology drug design and genomics. The AHWFBCCC basic/translational research program is home to a world-class clinical trials program as well as several sophisticated core facilities with specialties including molecular biology flow cytometry proteomics/metabolomics bioinformatics biostatistics and comparative medicine (vivarium).
- With fifteen physicians the faculty of the Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders program at Levine Childrens represents the largest pediatric hematology/oncology division (and the only pediatric stem cell transplant / cellular therapy program) serving the six million people who live in Charlotte Winston-Salem western North Carolina and northern South Carolina. The Cancer and Blood Disorders program at Levine Childrens sees over 175 new diagnoses annually and includes active pediatric stem cell transplant cellular therapy (CAR-T and NK) gene therapy proton therapy and Phase I programs. - Successful candidates will have an established independent research program with a demonstrated record of productivity in research extramural funding (especially NCI) and clinical trials. Investigators in the specific areas of tumor immune microenvironments tumor immunology or immunotherapy are especially encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and expand an independent research program in pediatric sarcoma.
- Collaborate with a robust network of basic/translational investigators and clinical trial consortia.
- Conduct limited clinical duties as part of the pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders program.
- Utilize state-of-the-art lab resources including CyTOF IVIS imaging and cell culture facilities.
Qualifications
- MD or MD/PhD board certified / eligible in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
- Established record of productivity in research extramural funding (especially NCI) and clinical trials.
- Expertise in tumor immune microenvironments immunology or immunotherapy is highly desirable.
- Experience in pediatric sarcoma research preferred.
