Minimum Qualifications
1. Possession of a Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling Rehabilitation Counseling Clinical Psychology Counseling Psychology Guidance Counseling Educational Counseling Social Work or Career Development Marriage and Family Therapy or Marriage Family and Child Counseling. OR 2. A license as a Marriage and Family Therapist ( MFT ) is an alternative qualification for this discipline pursuant to title 5 section 53410.1. OR 4. May submit a fully satisfied lifetime California Community College Instructor Credential in Counseling. (California credentials were no longer issued after July 1 1990). OR 5. The equivalent qualifications. (Candidates who claim equivalency must provide conclusive evidence as clear and reliable on the college transcripts as required on the District Equivalency Application Form. Refer to the Equivalency Procedures below. This is not a process to waive the minimum qualifications.) AND 6. Applicant must have demonstrated cultural competency sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic socioeconomic cultural disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff faculty and students. For DSPS COUNSELOR Possession of a Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in rehabilitation counseling; OR Masters degree in special education AND 24 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work in counseling guidance student personnel counseling psychology or social work; OR Masters degree in counseling guidance student personnel counseling psychology career development or social welfare; AND either 12 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically in counseling or rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities or two (2) years of full-time experience in one or more of the following: (A) Counseling or guidance for students with disabilities; or (B) Counseling and/or guidance in industry government public agencies military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities.
