Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a dynamic and strategic Cybersecurity Manager on a permanent full-time basis to lead our cybersecurity programme and champion a culture of security across the University.

As Cybersecurity Manager based at Kelburn Campus in Wellington you will provide strategic direction and operational leadership for the Universitys cybersecurity initiatives ensuring the ongoing security and resilience of our digital assets. You will work closely with executive leadership the Audit & Risk Committee and sector partners and play a key role in shaping our security strategy policies and awareness programmes.

You will lead a high-performing cybersecurity team manage security operations and incident response and ensure compliance with national and international standards. This is an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact in a complex diverse and innovative environment.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a university-wide cybersecurity strategy aligned with best practices and advise senior leadership on risks and trends.
  • Oversee threat monitoring vulnerability management and incident response across cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Ensure adherence to relevant laws and standards manage audits and assess third-party security risks.
  • Collaborate across departments deliver executive reporting and lead cybersecurity awareness initiatives.
  • Evaluate and manage security vendors and outsourcing arrangements to meet agreed standards.
  • Manage operating and capital budgets for cybersecurity initiatives.
  • Recruit develop and lead a high-performing cybersecurity team promoting diversity and inclusion.

Key requirements:

  • Significant experience in cybersecurity leadership within large complex organisations (preferably tertiary or public sector).
  • Demonstrated expertise in security operations assurance and incident response including cloud and hybrid environments.
  • In-depth knowledge of and experience applying key frameworks and standards (ISO 27001 NIST ASD Essential Eight NZISM Privacy Act).
  • Relevant industry certifications (CISSP CISM CISA or equivalent).
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and engage with executive leadership boards and external stakeholders.
  • Strong project management skills and experience delivering security programmes.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences and deliver executive-level reporting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity equity and inclusion in cybersecurity practice and team leadership.
