Head of AI Risk Management

Head of NFR III (JG 23)

The Head of AI Risk Management is accountable for AI Risk Management globally challenging INGs AI strategy at both global and local levels. This role ensures seamless collaboration within the Risk function and provides authoritative advice to senior management. The ideal candidate is a strategic leader with deep expertise in AI/ML risk capable of developing frameworks guiding teams and influencing policy. Success in this role means enabling ING to scale AI safely maintaining regulatory compliance and fostering a culture of risk awareness.

The Team

The AI Risk Management team is part of INGs Non-Financial Risk (NFR) domain. It plays a pivotal role in enabling the safe and scalable adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across the organization. The team develops and maintains AI risk frameworks advises internal stakeholders and ensures INGs AI strategy aligns with global standards and regulatory expectations. Through close collaboration with other 2nd Line of Defense (2LoD) functions and external regulators the team helps ING innovate responsibly while maintaining robust risk controls.

The team contributes to INGs global risk management by:

  • Leading the maintenance and expansion of the AI Risk Management framework leveraging existing risk frameworks (Model Risk Non-Financial Risk Compliance).

  • Challenging and advising the 1st Line of Defense (1LoD) on AI strategy control standards and risk processes including oversight of AI portfolios and initiatives.

  • Driving optimization of risk processes to ensure efficiency effectiveness and scalability.

  • Acting as the central contact point for senior management on all aspects of AI risk including regulatory interactions and external advocacy.

  • Defining the 2LoD AI Risk strategy and optimizing risk processes to ensure efficiency effectiveness and scalability across entities and use cases.

Global Head of AI Risk Management reports hierarchically to the Global Head of Non-Financial Risk located in Amsterdam

Roles and responsibilities

  • Leading the development and maintenance of AI risk frameworks policies and procedures.

  • Challenging and advising on INGs AI strategy and portfolio including new products and technologies.

  • Defining and optimizing scalable AI risk assessment processes.

  • Managing the AI risk portfolio and reporting on risk measures and appetite.

  • Ensuring effective oversight and challenge to both business and risk functions.

  • Perform and coordinate AI and GenAI risk assessments including scenario analysis and thematic reviews.

  • Leading a global team of AI risk specialists fostering development and succession planning.

  • Build and maintain a global knowledge community on AI risk and promote AI literacy within 2LoD.

  • Engaging with internal stakeholders (MBB GCRO Chief Analytics Compliance) and external regulators (ECB AFM industry fora).

  • Chairing and participating in key committees (NFR MT MoRMC NFRC AIRCO T&O AI Sub-committee GenAI SteerCo).

We are looking for the following knowledge and experience:

  • University degree preferably in a quantitative field.

  • At least 10 years of related work experience including global regulations on analytical solutions.

  • Analytical expertise with AI/ML applications in banking and risk domains.

  • Significant experience in first second and/or third line risk management.

  • Experience interacting with vendors and understanding IT/data risk management.

  • Strong communication skills able to present complex concepts to non-technical audiences.

  • Persuasive with a track record of managing senior stakeholder relationships up to board level.

  • Skilled in conflict management and decisive in promoting a risk culture.
