Position Summary
Responsible for preparing tissue samples using advanced skills in cutting slicing mounting and embedding. Adept at interpreting the samples and accurately analyzing them from different three-dimensional angles. Responds to inquiries and communicates clearly with physicians and other medical professionals. Performs routine clerical duties and computer functions associated with processing patient samples and results through the Laboratory. Schedule: Full-Time Monday thru Friday Day Shift 0600-1430. This position qualifies for a $5000 sign on bonus!
Knowledge and Skills Required
Thorough knowledge of laboratory and specimen/sample processing operations. Good organizational skills and ability to set priorities. Ability to manage multiple tasks and determine priorities. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of PC and networked computer applications and medical terminology. Demonstrate a high degree of independent access to confidential patient and organizational information and handle such information appropriately. Ability to operate a variety of laboratory tools and equipment.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Supports the hospitals mission through customer-focused service.
- Responds to inquiries from customers regarding all aspects of laboratory services including but not limited to specimen requirements turnaround times reference ranges and reporting protocols. Communications are conducted in a positive professional and courteous manner.
- Generate and review collection lists and pending logs from the LIS. Prioritizes and organizes histology specimens.
- Stocks histology supplies on regular basis insuring all needed materials are available.
- Performs all aspects of tissue specimen processing including: cutting slicing mounting and embedding tissues.
- Special ability required to perceive three-dimensional and geometrical relationships when cutting paraffin blocks and making embedding molds.
- Accurately prioritizes and accessions patient tissues in Laboratory Information System.
- Understands the functional relationships between information systems in order to identify problems and notifies LIS administrator of such problems immediately.
- Must be familiar with basic laboratory ordering testing and reporting operations and recognize problem areas.
- Takes appropriate corrective action or notifies the area coordinator or department manager.
- Performs daily temperature and function checks for assigned areas.
- Documents all checks appropriately and takes appropriate corrective action if any are outside acceptable limits.
- During downtimes may perform other routine laboratory tasks including but not limited to specimen processing: receiving specimens through the pneumatic tube entering required data into the LIS verifying patient and specimen ID and test requests centrifuging and dispersing specimens to the appropriate areas communicating with technical staff to ensure efficient turnaround time of results storing specimens appropriately; and other clerical duties as assigned.
- Use personal protective equipment in accordance with hospital and laboratory policies.
- Comply with all applicable policies and procedures including but not limited to: all departmental and functional policies and procedures maintaining acceptable attendance records arriving for duty punctually and leaving on time safety and waste disposal and following dress code.
- Sensitive to the needs feelings and capabilities of others. Approaches others in a non-threatening and pleasant manner and treats everyone with respect.
- Fulfills commitments to team members. Demonstrates the Standards of Excellence.

Education and Experience
Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent with Histotechnician/Histotechnologist Certification (defined as either completion of an accredited Histotechnician program or histotech hands-on work experience equivalent to an accredited Histotech program).
Preferred: Associates degree with ASCP certification
Minimum: 1-2 years previous laboratory experience with significant experience in a histological laboratory or research environment.
Preferred: 3 years or more working as a Histotechnician/Histotechnologist with ASCP Certification
