Applications are invited for a Medical Assessor to join the national Centre for Adverse Reactions Monitoring (CARM).
About us/Mō mātou
CARM is contracted by Medsafe (the New Zealand Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Authority) to deliver various national pharmacovigilance services and it is located within the New Zealand Pharmacovigilance Centre (NZPhvC) at the University of Otago Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka in Ōtepoti Dunedin. As well as CARM work the NZPhvC undertakes other activities that contribute to the safer use of therapeutic products.
The role Te mahi
As a Medical Assessor you will apply your clinical knowledge of medicine pharmacology and vaccinology to review spontaneous reports of suspected adverse reactions to therapeutic products (including medicines medicine-associated medical devices medicinal cannabis products vaccines and natural health products) using a standardised approach employed across the World Health Organizations Programme for International Drug Monitoring.
Your assessment of individual reports in the context of previous reports product datasheets and published literature will contribute to the identification of adverse events of concern and will help to inform regulatory action prescribing advice and education.
Skills and experience Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
You should be a registered medical practitioner and be working (or very recently have worked) in general practice or another relevant medical specialty in Aotearoa New Zealand and be enthused about contributing to the safe use of medicines and other therapeutic products. Ideally you will also have some knowledge of pharmacology and pharmacoepidemiology.
Communication skills both oral and written are key requirements as is the ability to work collaboratively in a team.

This is a fixed term position at 0.2 FTE based in Ōtepoti Dunedin available until 30 June 2028.

Appointment will be made at the appropriate step on the Senior Lecturer / Senior Research Fellow salary scale commensurate with qualifications skills and experience.
Senior Lecturer / Senior Research Fellow - Medical & Dental - $148416 to $184993 per annum (pro rata).
Senior Lecturer / Senior Research Fellow above the bar - Medical & Dental - $192310 per annum (pro rata).
