Job Summary

Position Description

TheLegislative Department has an outstanding opportunity for a 20-hour per week Temporary Legislative Assistant in the office of Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth representing District 3. This is a dynamic fast paced and collegial environment that provides an opportunity for you to demonstrate your skills in administrative office operations communication and interest in local government. The Legislative Department works collaboratively to realize the Citys vision of racial equity.


This position requires a self-starter with strong attention to detail and keen sense of organization; the ability to prioritize and demonstrate judgement skills; discretion in handling sensitive and confidential matters; and the ability to manage multiple projects while responding quickly and professionally to those who contact the office. Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills are essential. This is a critical position in a collaborative and mission-driven office where teamwork and individual responsibility are valued. The office is comprised of four staff members with this position dual reporting to the Councilmember and Director of Operations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Constituent Services:
    • Assist with screening prioritizing and responding to incoming correspondence and communications in a timely manner including emails phone calls and mail.
    • Facilitate effective communication within City Departments and with external stakeholders including constituents residents and government departments in other jurisdictions.
    • Attend community meetings with or on behalf of the Councilmember.
    • Provide professional service-oriented connections with members of the public other City Councilmembers and offices and City Departments.
  • Administrative Support:
    • Maintain and organize physical and electronic files ensuring accessibility and easy retrieval.
  • Communications:
    • Assist in the Councilmembers communications with the district (i.e. writing newsletters managing paper mail and voicemail managing social media.)
  • Stay informed about policy issues and legislation before the Council.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience in administrative assistance communications customer service public relations or other relevant experience in a volunteer or professional capacity.
  • Experience working for an elected official executive or director or on a campaign.
  • Ability to set priorities meet deadlines and accomplish objectives with minimal supervision or oversight.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and remain calm under pressure; a track record of reliability hard work collaborative style the ability to contribute as a team player but can also work independently.
  • Commitment to creating a welcoming professional and inclusive environment for staff constituents and other stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook and similar scheduling tools.

Additional Information

This position is classified as a Legislative Assistant and is exempt from the Seattle Civil Service System. The part-time salary range for this classification is $35 - $40 per hour for 20 hours. This is a temporary assignment lasting from mid-January 2025 to the end of July 2026.


This position will be onsite at Seattle City Hall (600 Fourth Ave. 3rd Floor Seattle WA). This position is a part-time opportunity limited to 20 hours per week.
