Job Description:

The Material Handler performs a variety of functions in the material handling area including moving furniture and equipment setting up for events and collecting and disposing of trash and excess material. This position will operate the material handling van dump truck forklift and other College vehicles; coordinate with customers onsite concerning furniture and equipment moves and event setups; and must have the ability to read and interpret instructions contained in property dispositions work orders and job tickets. Reports to Events Coordinator Facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Arrive on time daily to receive assignments from the supervisor. Collect work orders and report to work sites to accomplish tasks such as moving furniture or equipment setting up or tearing down events or collecting and removing trash.
  • Operate the box truck golf cart dump truck forklift and other College vehicles.
  • Coordinate with customers onsite concerning furniture and equipment moves and event setups.
  • Read interpret and understand instructions contained in property dispositions work orders and job tickets.
  • Organize and work at the job site to locate pick up and deliver equipment as listed on property dispositions work orders and job tickets.
  • Document completed work on job tickets work orders and property dispositions.
  • Use moving equipment such as blankets tie downs dollies and carts and applicable skills to ensure protection of workers furniture computers and buildings from damage during handling or transport.
  • Perform quarterly inventory counts of event furniture and equipment on all campuses.
  • Ensure event furniture and equipment are clean and in working order before each set-up.
  • Employ safe working and driving practices including proper lifting loading securing material driving within the speed limit or lower if conditions dictate and using assistance during backing.
  • Perform daily operator checks on the material handling box truck including oil water tire pressure lights brakes and interior cleaning.
  • Promptly report vehicle problems or accidents to the immediate supervisor and the supervisor in Transportation.
  • Communicate verbally in person and on a two-way radio to accomplish job requirements.
  • Responsible for knowing and conforming to all safety practices and regulations that apply to this specific area and position. Unsafe conditions should be reported to the immediate supervisor and to the Pensacola State College Police Department/Public Safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Able to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changes in scheduled work.
  • Must have knowledge of safe lifting and moving techniques.
  • Excessive lifting carrying propping bending and reaching are required to fulfill job requirements.
  • May be exposed to weather conditions including extreme heat and rain.
  • Available to work outside normal working hours and possibly weekends and evenings to accommodate special events or needs.

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and six months experience in moving furniture equipment and loading equipment on moving vans are required. A current valid Florida Class D license or a Florida CDL with a safe driving record is required. Demonstrated ability to lift 75 pounds from the floor to the waist and move the load to a new location within ten feet is required. Successful results of a criminal background check are required.

Pursuant to College policy it is an employment eligibility requirement for an applicant to meet the requirements of 435.04(2) Florida Statutes related to background investigations. Any person failing to meet the requirements of the statute will be deemed not qualified to hold employment in this position. A Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) approved background check will be conducted on every successful candidate as a condition of employment and any person who fails to disclose any adverse information contained in the background investigation at the time of submitting the employment application will be disqualified from employment.

Hourly Rate: $15.00

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger handle or feel; reach with hands and arms and stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to stand walk sit and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions moving mechanical parts and high precarious places. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
