Job Duties

Are you a compassionate and dedicated LPN looking to make a difference in your community The Mount Rogers Health District is seeking a motivated Wage Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join our team.

Position Overview:
Following specific protocol provides direct patient care in clinics and patient homes. Characteristic duties: administers oral IM subcutaneous medications and immunizations if a medications course has been completed and performed under supervision of a RN or Physician. Interviews patients for medical histories counsels patients teaches instructs obtains lab specimens and performs routine laboratory work takes vital signs refers abnormal findings to physician prepares patients for physical examinations and assists physician during examination. Licensure as Practical Nurse required by state code. An LPN provides essential clinical services like wound care vaccinations and disease screening that are core to the Comprehensive Harm Reduction (CHR) programs public health mission and cannot be delivered by non-clinical staff.

Essential job functions include but are not limited to:
Direct Patient Care/Clinical Services
Functions as a Licensed Practical Nurse in assigned clinics
Interviews clients and provides counseling according to applicable program policies procedures and health guidelines applying critical thinking and cultural awareness to all communication modes
Performs required laboratory tests and administers medication as ordered by clinician and according to district protocols OSHA and CLIA guidelines
Completes required documentation in client chart and accurately completes all laboratory requisitions
Assists clinician in performing physical examinations; provides post examination counseling to clients based on individual client need
Notifies patients of all test results based on guidance from clinician; educates patients about test results and necessary follow-up; schedules follow-up testing consult or referral
Makes appropriate referrals for medical care and community resources in consultation with clinician

Immunization Services
Under the supervision of an RN or physician administers routine child and adult immunizations to clients in Child Health and WIC Clinics as well as on a walk-in basis; administers foreign travel vaccinations to clients according to recommendations of health director
Educates clients about vaccine preventable diseases and recommended immunization schedules and provides them with current vaccine information statement sheets
Documents vaccinations given in WebVision as well as on immunization record for clients
Administers post exposure prophylaxis according to direction of district health director

Clinical Maintenance & Support
Makes phone call reminders for clients in accordance with policy prior to clinic appointment
May orders supplies for clinic stock and maintain supplies in clinic examination rooms; monitors supplies and orders well in advance to avoid depletion of needed items
Assists co-workers clinician supervisor or director and performs other duties/services as assigned to support health department activities and programs
Provides outreach trainings programs and displays to promote health department services and protect the health and safety of the clients/community
Obtains and maintains appropriate certifications or trainings to meet program requirements

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. May be required by VDH to adjust work hours location and job duties and participate in training to meet public health business needs including emergencies. If this position is designated as a mobile worker this includes both working in the field and teleworking at an alternate location when not in the field or during an emergency closing. You may be required to periodically come into your assigned office to attend meetings or training.

VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B measles mumps rubella and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current years seasonal influenza vaccination.

Wage employees are subject to the following conditions of employment: Wage employees serve at the will and pleasure of the appointing authority. Continuing employment is based on available funding and business need. Wage employees are not covered by the provisions of the Virginia Personnel Act. Therefore they are not eligible for benefits which are provided to salaried employees such as leave credits holiday pay insurance access to the grievance procedure etc.

Wage employees are paid only for the hours they actually work. Virginia state law currently requires that agencies not permit wage employees to work in excess of 29 hours per week on average over the course of a year.

Wage employees may not work for VDH beyond 1500 hours during the period of May 1 April 30 of the following year (the Standard Measurement Period). Once a wage employee works the maximum of 1500 hours during the Standard Measurement Period the employee may be rehired as a wage employee of VDH only after the next Standard Measurement Period has begun.

Wage employees are eligible to apply for all classified positions for which recruitment has been initiated including those limited to State Employees Only. If a wage employee becomes employed in a classified position he/she will be eligible to purchase retirement credit for the time worked as a wage employee. Continuing employment is based on available funding and business need.


Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of techniques and practices of the nursing profession of public health practices of quality assurance concepts of teaching principles of principles of decision making and problem solving techniques of accurate record keeping and quality control of socio-economic conditions relating to personal needs of clients
Skills in performing technical procedures in communication orally and written in interacting with clients and the general public
Ability to document clearly and accurately utilizing the health departments accepted form of documentation to establish and maintain working relationships with individuals and families to function as a team member
Current BLS/CPR certification

Prior experience in a public health setting preferred
