The Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Ft Logan (CMHHIFL) is a 130-bed psychiatric facility located in Denver that is dedicated to meeting the needs of the community by providing mental health treatment to the adult population in the metro area. The mission of CMHIFL is to provide the highest quality mental health services to adults with complex serious and persistent mental illness within the resources available. CMHHIFL is dedicated to providing trauma-informed care and promoting the implementation of trauma-informed practices within the organization.

The Medical Services Section exists to promote and protect the health of patients and staff by overseeing providing and coordinating all medically related care and clinical analyses necessary for the proper evaluation and treatment of the hospitals patients and by managing the infection control employee health and emergency response programs for the hospital.

Description of Job

CMHHIFL has expanded its bed capacity by adding two new units which include an additional 44 beds. These beds are designated for forensic patients who are deemed incompetent to stand trial and require inpatient psychiatric evaluation and treatment. Additionally 16 more beds will be allocated for forensic patients within the Medical Services building. This expansion will result in a projected 64% increase in the hospitals patient capacity with the new forensics unit which is set to open in late 2025. This significant increase highlights the need for a new physical therapist position to assist with meeting the physical therapy needs of our patients. Other duties include:

Primary Job Duties

Clinical Physical Therapy:

  • Provides advanced clinical physical therapy services including patient evaluation treatment planning and implementation of evidence-based interventions to improve mobility function and quality of life.
  • Requires a high level of clinical expertise and independent judgment to deliver comprehensive care across a broad spectrum of patient conditions.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to develop and coordinate patient-centered treatment plans that promote optimal recovery and functional outcomes.
    • Assesses physically ill injured clients who are also mentally ill per physician order by reviewing medical history interviewing the client and performing tests and measurements.
    • Analyzes the data to create and administer a physical therapy treatment program unique to the client to restore maximum function relieve pain and prevent or limit physical disability.
    • Reassess the client before each treatment and his/her response to treatment after each session. Modifies treatment plans and goals as the clients condition changes.
    • Documents the assessment treatment procedure response progress re-assessment and discharge summary in the electronic health record (EHR).
    • Communicates with internal and external medical personnel to maximize the outcome of the clients treatment program while maintaining HIPAA compliance.
    • Trains hospital staff to assist the Physical Therapist in the clinical setting and to assist the client with the therapeutic exercise program. Instructs the client and chaperone in the correct use of treatment equipment and supplies. Educates staff in lifting turning and walking clients and in movement precautions of post-surgery clients.

Physical Therapy Clinic Administration:
  • Independently manages key administrative functions of the physical therapy clinic and supports the Physical Therapy Supervisor in ensuring efficient day-to-day operations.
  • Responsibilities include overseeing scheduling logistics monitoring inventory and equipment readiness maintaining documentation systems and assisting with data collection and reporting. While working under general guidance the incumbent exercises independent judgment in routine administrative matters and collaborates with the supervisor to implement process improvements and uphold clinic standards.
    • Assists with developing and maintaining the Physical Therapy Department Manual which provides guidance for all departmental operations.
    • Disseminates and maintains clinical documentation in accordance with hospital and medical record practice standards.
    • Maintains treatment statistics including tracking use of equipment supplies the type of diagnoses of the clients and number of treatments per client.
    • Participates in ad hoc committees and treatment team planning when client mobility and safety is a concern.
    • Maintains files of diagram exercise programs which are modified for individual clients and provides copies for the client and for the medical record.
    • Assists with maintaining a file of instructions for each piece of equipment or exercise supply used in the clinic.
    • Schedules clients and makes decisions about changes to the schedule depending on clinical need.
    • Submits a billing sheet for each clients treatment reflecting the diagnosis and the treatment rendered; maintains a daily treatment log in the clinic reflecting this information; and reviews and ensure the billing sheet is current.
    • Tracks use of equipment supplies and linens and reorders as needed.
    • Maintains and updates skills and knowledge through continuing medical education professional literature and in-house training.
    • Independently ensures current unrestricted physical therapy license in the State of Colorado. Submits a copy of the license to supervisor without prompting.
    • Other department related administrative duties as assigned.
Maintain a Safe Environment:
  • Responsible for ensuring a safe clean and hazard-free environment for patients staff and visitors within the physical therapy clinic. This includes monitoring equipment functionality maintaining infection control practices adhering to safety protocols and identifying potential risks within the clinical setting. The role involves proactive participation in safety audits emergency preparedness and continuous education to promote a culture of safety and compliance with regulatory standards.
    • Disinfects items used each treatment day. Quarterly cleans each item present in the therapy clinic and documents this on the cleaning log maintained in the Physical Therapy office.
    • Secures cleaning chemicals in an area that is not accessible to clients.
    • Alerts medical clinic personnel if treatment will be performed in an area outside of the therapy clinic.

Minimum Qualifications Substitutions Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:

  • Current valid Colorado State licensure or certification related to the work assignment
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position

Special Qualifications:
  • Must possess and maintain an unencumbered PT license or certification to practice in CO via the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience providing direct physical therapy evaluation and treatment in a clinical or hospital setting
  • Experience developing treatment plans and documenting clinical progress
  • Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary care teams
  • Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) or Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) meeting Colorado DORA licensure requirements
  • Current Colorado Physical Therapist license in good standing
  • Experience working in inpatient or hospital settings
  • Demonstrate ability to maintain professionalism boundaries and trauma-informed care practices in a secured inpatient environment
  • Strong clinical reasoning therapeutic assessment and documentation skills
  • Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams
  • Excellent communication skills including ability to to provide clear education and therapeutic instructions to clients and staff.

    • Out-of-State Drivers License holders must obtain a valid non-restricted Colorado Drivers License within 30 days of employment start date.
