Assistant Controller

About the Role
A mission-driven organization in the higher education sector is seeking an experienced and collaborative Assistant Controller to support financial operations compliance and reporting. This role ensures strong internal controls integrity of financial data and continuous improvement across the Accounting function. The ideal candidate is proactive detail-oriented and motivated to contribute to a growing and evolving institution.
Key Responsibilities
Manage month-end and year-end close cycles ensuring timely and accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP
Oversee general ledger activity including reconciliations journal entries financial schedules and variance analysis
Support annual audit processes and coordinate deliverables with external auditors
Maintain and enhance internal controls and accounting policies to ensure compliance
Partner closely with internal departments to provide financial insights and ensure accounting accuracy
Support grant and restricted fund accounting and reporting (as applicable)
Mentor and guide accounting staff while fostering strong teamwork and development
Assist with annual budget preparation and ongoing monitoring
Identify and support process improvements and ERP system optimization
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or related field required
5 years of progressive accounting experience; nonprofit or higher education experience a plus
Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal controls
ERP system experience (e.g. Workday NetSuite Banner etc.)
Strong analytical skills with a commitment to accuracy and detail
Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a dynamic environment
