Description of the Position: (Purpose of the Position): Students work together with a faculty member on scholarly or artistic projects.
Project Title: What is the recipe for the Broadway Belt
Faculty Mentor:Marita Stryker
Project Description: How is belting your face off on a road trip different than singing Soprano 2 in Chapel Choir or a role in a Lyric Theater production Voice researchers are grappling with these same questions as they try to develop scientific studies that focus on commercial and contemporary singing in addition to the longstanding tradition of studying the Western Classical singing voice.
This project will explore how belt voice is described across voice pedagogy and popular music literature in hopes of finding a clear consensus that future researchers can use in their quantitative study of belt. CURI researchers will review scholarly literature one article or chapter per week leading to a collection and analysis of existing work. Weekly meetings will cover perception of read material audio examples and development of a lecture recital presenting songs that showcase various definitions and historical differences of belting across genres. Students are asked to read weekly and reflect analyze using coding software listen to musical examples and prepare a performance related to the subject.

Qualifications: (Education/Experience/Skills) A student interested in applying for the CURI academic year program must be enrolled as an on-campus St. Olaf student. There is no GPA requirement that must be met in order to apply for the program but a students academic record will be considered during the selection process. Skills are dependent on individual projects.
