Job Summary

Full-Time CEA Hourly Range $26.97 - $36.13

POSITION TITLE: Childrens Librarian

REPORTS TO: Librarian II Head of Youth Services

SUPERVISES: Library Clerks and Volunteers as assigned

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Under the direction of the Head of Youth Services responsible for providing library services programs and activities for young people.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Plans prepares markets implements and supervises programs that enlighten and entertain children such as story times guest presenters craft activities library orientation summer reading programs and other programs for the general public for preschool day care school Scout groups and other childrens groups both at the library and at other locations.

Maintains and establishes partnerships with area businesses and organizations for their support and involvement in childrens programming.

Maintains records and prepares reports on themes presented and the attendance of such events and submits reports as assigned.

Performs supervisory responsibilities over paraprofessional and clerical employees and volunteers as needed or assigned including training planning assigning directing work addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Staffs the Childrens area greeting users and assisting them with accessing all library resources including assisting with reference questions locating appropriate materials assisting with the use of the online catalog assisting with the use of public computers referring users to programming and resources that the Childrens Department offers.

Assists with the maintenance of the Childrens area including shelving and organizing books and other materials as directed by the Head of Youth Services.

Supports childrens collection development through the selection and de-selection of library materials under the direction of the Head of Youth Services and in accordance with the librarys collection development policy.

Designs and prepares print materials to support library activities such as posters handouts bookmarks flyers brochures bulletin boards displays and other promotional materials and uses social media in these efforts when directed.

Attends conferences meetings webinars and workshops to stimulate interest in the use of the library and to acquire additional professional knowledge.

*Attendance at the assigned work location is an essential function.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

Works scheduled evenings and weekends as assigned.

Assists at the circulation desk as directed.

Serves as the public floor supervisor as needed or assigned.

Performs related duties as directed or as the situation dictates.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY:

Knowledge of childrens literature and age appropriate educational materials.

Knowledge of standard library principles procedures methods practices and materials and tools.

Skill in utilizing computer word processing and computer graphics software.

Ability to use standard library databases and how to effectively search them.

Ability to use modern technology including mobile devices Microsoft Office software and social media.

Ability to communicate effectively present programs and respond to questions from supervisors coworkers and the general public.

Ability to read interpret and apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.

Ability to use creative and critical thinking skills in the development of programs.

Ability to work independently prioritize work meet deadlines and make decisions on the basis of established policies and procedures.

Ability to perform effective library reference readers advisory and other professional library work.

Ability to stimulate the interest of readers in library resources through the effective planning and implementation of various programs workshops and activities.

Ability to organize and supervise the work of clerical employees and volunteers as assigned.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors coworkers subordinates and the general public.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY: (Continued)

Demonstrates professional behavior that supports team efforts and enhances team behavior performance and productivity.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES:

Must possess an associates degree with a bachelors degree preferred.

Minimum of 1-3 years of prior library experience working with children and/or youth preferred.

Must possess a valid drivers license at the time of hire and maintain it throughout the course of employment.

The physical demands and typical working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work is generally performed indoors in a library setting. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds in setting up tables and chairs to prepare for programs. Some outdoor work is required during the summer. Work duties also require a great deal of interaction with the general public.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger handle or feel speak clearly and hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; and stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to stand and climb or balance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.

Work duties require a great deal of interaction with the general public and may be stressful when working under deadlines.
