SEIU Virginia 512 is a dynamic labor union representing local government workers and home care workers across Virginia. Position Summary:
Organizers help grow the union identify activists and leaders educate and empower union members to take action at work and in the community work with community partners elect champions and hold elected officials accountable; all in order to build power for union members and working families. Organizers will work with local government workers and home care providers to grow union membership build power through electing pro union majorities and collective bargaining and raise standards.
Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Conduct broad and intensive outreach efforts to workers in person via site visits house visits and other strategic ways.
- Sign workers up as union members and contributors to the unions Committee on Political Education (COPE) fund.
- Build one-on-one relationships with workers.
- Map and chart worksites and relationships to expand union density and power in the workplace.
- Manage multiple worksite and or organizing committees throughout the union and turf assignment.
- Identify and develop worker leaders.
- Conduct individual and group meetings with workers and partners.
- Frontline to assist employees with workplace issues; able to determine if the issue is a grievance issue based campaign or just a concern.
- Able to assist employees in labor management settings.
- Working with members to identify recruit and develop leaders to win the campaign.
- Mobilizing workers to win collective bargaining rights and a union election.
- Begin to assist in the training and development of fellow staff and member organizers.
- Engage motivate and mobilize workers to take action.
- Plan and carry out actions and events to support worker organizing efforts.
- Under the direction of the lead assist in executing strategic organizing plans.
- Begin to expand organizing skills by developing and managing multiple areas/departments of turf.
- Ensure the tracking reporting and analysis of campaign data.
- Work with allied organizations and communities.
- Coordinate with other local union staff to carry out the unions organizing program and priorities.
Qualifications:
Candidates should possess previous organizing experience; a strong commitment to working people and equity; strong personal verbal and written communication skills. Candidates should also thrive in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment.
Successful candidates will bring the following skills and attributes to the position:
- Minimum of two years prior experience in organizing and demonstrated commitment to workers rights and social justice. (If no prior experience position may be offered as an Organizer in Training);
- Adept at leading and motivating workers in difficult struggles;
- Relevant knowledge including labor regulations issues etc.;
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- Ability to establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from all backgrounds;
- Skilled at meeting deadlines in a fast-paced campaign environment;
- Strong oral written and listening skills; analytical and judgment skills; and organizational and prioritizing skills;
- Flexible and adept at dealing with changing priorities;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
- Working knowledge of computer programs including social media Word Excel VAN and good planning and administrative skills;
- Kindness empathy and concern for others.
Requirements include:
- Valid U.S. drivers license with a good driving record;
- Ability and willingness to travel within Virginia;
- Relocation to the Virginia area is required if offered a position.
Salary and Benefits:
The starting salary for an Organizer II position is $67324 with a generous benefit package including fully-paid health insurance paid leave auto allowance cell phone allowance and more as detailed in the locals Collective Bargaining agreement.
Candidates with less than one (1) years experience may be offered an Organizer-in-Training position with a salary of 52994 and the same benefit package.
Term of Employment: This is a full-time bargaining unit position.
Geography: Organizers can be based anywhere across the Northern Virginia area but are required to travel to Loudoun and/or other locations for work in the field with members and workers.
