Job location: The Central Executive Management Office of BBMRI-ERIC in Graz Austria


Job purpose: With your experience and drive as Biobanking Specialist you will support the BBMRI national nodes and associated biobanks in implementing and maintaining sustainable biobanking practices and developments enhance their visibility and foster collaboration with various stakeholders; e.g. through common European funded scientific this capacity you will collaborate closely with Biobanks and National Nodes in our Member States and other related key stakeholders (such as scientific experts from academia and industry) of one of the largest European Research Infrastructures in Health and Life Science.


Contract: We offer a 3-year contract full time (40 hours/week) with the possibility of extension/permanent contract.

BBMRI-ERIC enables the development of innovative technology and processes as a cross-domain network that facilitates responsible access to high quality samples data and biomolecular resources. The Biobanking Development (BBD) department focuses on integrating new established National Nodes and affiliated biobanking networks into the BBMRI community. To support this BBD applies streamlined onboarding processes that promote collaboration harmonize services and accelerate engagement. Through technological innovation and active community involvement BBD fosters sustainable growth increases the visibility of BBMRI biobanks and helps build a resilient biobanking ecosystem.


In your capacity as Biobanking Specialist driven by a passion for the multidisciplinary landscape of biobanking beyond the laboratory you will confidently carry out tasks for setting up such an ecosystem. For example this includes activities within European projects (Horizon Europe) such as scientific writing active communication and timely execution of project activities with a profound understanding of sample processing but without operational biobanking work (this is carried out directly by the biobanks). Your PhD in biomedical or life sciences supported by extensive research experience enables you to seamlessly foster collaboration between scientists and biobanks while proactively addressing challenges and contributing innovative ideas to drive the BBD departments mission forward.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the daily operations of the BBD department including monitoring and supporting the BBMRI access pipeline to facilitate interactions between scientists and biobanks.
  • Participation in the execution of on-going tasks within EU projects and/or supporting application for new ones relying on your scientific background.
  • Draft scientific content as required.
  • Communicate diplomatically within an international and intercultural context.
  • Participate in preparation phase of EU projects including proposal writing.
  • Support the strategic growth and innovation by actively engaging with our community to identify needs and deliver cutting-edge solutions that advance the BBDs vision and objectives.

In this role your required qualifications and skills are:

  • PhD degree in a relevant field such as biomedical sciences life sciences or One Health.
  • A minimum of 3-4 years of professional experience in scientific research related to biobanking biomedical sciences or life sciences including biobanking management (knowledge or understanding of the various aspects of biobanking including sample collections processing and storage informed consent etc).
  • Strong organisational skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Team-oriented mindset with the capability to work independently and collaboratively under pressure.
  • Demonstrated experience in successful participation in international or EU projects (Horizon Europe) along with project management skills is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of Transnational Access funding mechanism for service provision by research infrastructures across the EU is advantegenous.
  • Familiarity with the EU landscape of Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) is a plus.
  • Professional fluency in English as English is the official working language of BBMRI-ERIC.
  • Readiness for moderate travel.

Employment terms and conditions

As we aim to provide a diverse work environment the work can be performed at the headquarters in Graz with occasional home office options.

The employment follows the Austrian employment law.


What we offer

A minimum annual gross salary of 65000.00 (40 hours/week) will be offered aligned with European and international standards for comparable roles and responsibilities. The final salary will be determined based on the candidates qualifications and experience.
