The Parks Recreation and Community Services Department is actively seeking two (2) Park Ranger.

This is clerical customer support and semi-skilled service maintenance work in performing manual labor tasks in the upkeep and repair of public parks grounds. Work requires knowledge of uninvolved standardized work routines used in maintaining park facilities which involves the use of common equipment or uncomplicated machinery and in performing basic clerical work. Contacts require courtesy tact and effectiveness in dealing with others to request or provide information ask questions or obtain clarification. The work is routine following established routines standing instructions and established procedures but some variation in the sequence of procedures used is permitted based on situations encountered in the workplace. Duties at the park are in a fast-paced environment requiring strong multi-tasking skills. Operates standard office equipment such as telephones motor vehicles personal computers cash register credit card machine assortment of machinery and tools such as chain saws and backhoes. The work is performed in both office and field environment where there are some risks and hazards but they are known predictable and controllable. The physical demands involve light to moderate physical activity which may include lifting of concrete sand or lime rock or moving objects such as fallen trees weighing more than 50 pounds. The work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied and although subject to standard practices and procedures the worker is permitted some latitude to set their own priorities subject to superiors approval.

Examples of Work

  • Maintains the cleanliness of the grounds and the facilities.
  • Clears trails trims vegetation paints park facilities and signposts collects trash and other maintenance activities.
  • Maintain and clean restrooms and shower facilities to include stocking of toilet paper and cleaning supplies.
  • Explains facilities and services provided for public use greets visitors answers questions collects fees assists with answering phones makes reservations and provides information and directions.
  • Coordinates assistance for injured wildlife.
  • Prepares forms and reports on a wide range of subjects including fees receipts visitor use accidents equipment logs purchasing documents and rental agreements.
  • Advises visitors concerning safety fire prevention proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities; inspects facilities and checks for compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to parking campfires noise level sanitation and safety; brings problems or violations to the attention of visitors and if appropriate issues notices of violations .
  • Performs minor first aid duties and follows through with proper emergency procedures in the event of more serious incidents.
  • Upholds regulations regarding park use patrols campgrounds directs vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Works outside in the cold and extreme heat and in areas where potentially dangerous animals/plants may be present.
  • Responds to emergency calls and investigates accidents complaints disturbances and other problems.
  • Explains regulations to park visitors and provides information and advice on park activities amenities wildlife ecosystems as well as cultural historical and/or natural resources history and location.
  • Maintains safety of small buildings fences trails service roads fire lanes boardwalks campsites picnic sites boat ramps docks and all other necessary facilities. Assists with wildlife and plant management as needed which may include monitoring evaluating and handling the resource.

  • Operates a motor vehicle to conduct field inspections.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonvilles competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.

  • Knowledge of rules regulations principles and procedures governing construction and maintenance activities at a public park.

  • Skill in preparing and maintaining maintenance and revenue records and reports.
  • Skill in operating equipment tools and vehicles.
  • Ability to operate and maintain public parks and related facilities and equipment under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate telephones motor vehicles personal computers assortment of machinery and tools such as chain saws backhoes cash register credit card machine and standard office equipment.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles.
  • Ability to prepare written reports using word processing applications.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform minor first aid duties and follow through with proper emergency procedures in the event of more serious incidents.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time walking bending lifting objects more than 50 weight sedentary work as well as work in outdoor environments.
  • Ability to work a rotating shift including events weekends and holidays.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information

OPEN REQUIREMENTS:

  • One years combination of education and/or experience in cash handling and customer service is required.
  • One year of experience in park operations ecology natural resource management general maintenance is preferred.
  • Must be able to perform manual labor read write and communicate in English.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • The probationary period for this class is six (6) months.
  • This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment random and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonvilles Drug Free Workplace Policy (0401).
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
  • A valid drivers license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained.
  • Must qualify for prior to appointment obtain and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.
  • Must obtain and maintain CPR/AED certification within six (6) months of hire.
