SDOT is seeking a collaborative and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join our Grants & Contracts team within the Finance and Administration Division. This is a pivotal role supporting the financial integrity of SDOTs grant-funded capital projects that shape Seattles transportation infrastructure.

As a Senior Accountant youll support financial reporting billing and reimbursement processes for multimillion-dollar projects funded by federal state and local agencies. Youll ensure compliance with regulations from USDOT WSDOT and other funding entities while maintaining alignment with GAAP and City accounting standards.

The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting knowledge attention to detail and a thorough understanding of governmental and grant accounting principles. They are skilled in financial analysis problem-solving and data reconciliation and can interpret complex funding agreements and navigate multiple systems. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are essential as the position works closely with internal stakeholders and external agencies to resolve billing issues ensure compliance and support SDOTs delivery of critical transportation infrastructure projects.


Job Responsibilities

  • Prepares reviews and submits reimbursement billings for federal state and local grant-funded capital projects in compliance with USDOT WSDOT and City requirements.
  • Monitors and reconciles grant and project accounts to ensure expenditures are properly recorded eligible and supported with required documentation.
  • Analyzes project financial activity to identify billing or compliance issues and coordinate corrections with project managers and accounting staff.
  • Maintains accurate grant tracking and reporting schedules to ensure timely recovery of project costs and adherence to funding deadlines.
  • Interprets and applies complex grant agreements funding terms and regulatory requirements to ensure compliance with federal and state guidelines.
  • Collaborates with SDOT internal divisionsand external granting agencies to resolve billing discrepancies and improve reimbursement processes.
  • Assists in the preparation of audit documentationand reports related to grant-funded projects and capital project accounting.
  • Supports department goals in promoting diversity and social justice.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:

  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting or related field. Please note degree requires satisfactory completion of at least 24 semester hours or 36 quarter credit units in accounting with no substitution allowed.

Experience:

  • Three (3) years of experience withgeneral or governmental accounting.

OR:An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.

Though not requirements strong candidates will have some of the following experience or are able to describe comparable experience:

  • Experience in governmental accounting with an emphasis on capital project and grant fund management.
  • Knowledge of federal state and local grant compliance requirements including 2 CFR 200 USDOT and WSDOT Local Agency Guidelines.
  • Experience preparing and reconciling complex grant reimbursement billings for transportation or infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with City of Seattle financial systems such as PeopleSoft or other large enterprise accounting systems.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret funding agreements and apply accounting principles to complex financial transactions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with project managers finance staff and external funding agencies to resolve billing or compliance issues.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills with a commitment to accuracy and process improvement.

Other Requirements:
Work Environment / Physical Demands:

  • Work is typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 3 days of work is completed in a City office and 2 days of work is completed remotely in a regular 40-hour work week.

The Citys full salary range for this position is $46.40 - $54.02 hourly.
