Description of Job


The Nurse Manager (NM) works in tandem with other Nurse Managers. The NM works within multiple levels of professional services as care is coordinated across a continuum. The NM adheres to and references the professional codes of conduct regulatory agency standards the Nurse Practice Act State Board of Nursing professional codes of ethics and scope of discipline practice guides to ensure various levels of nursing personnel function within their scope of practice. The NM is responsible at the unit level for communicating implementing and clarifying nursing policies and implementing performance improvements along with procedures using evidence-based practice. Participates and prepares nursing personnel for onsite surveys monitors documentation and ensures quality of care is rendered according to the State Board of Nursing (SBON) Centers for Medicare Services (CMS) The Joint Commission (TJC) Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and the Colorado Department Personnel Board Rules and Regulations. Collaborate with Employee Labor and Relations (EL&R) and Colorado WINS for employee related matters.

Responsibilities also include the provision of safe appropriate nursing care on the units by effective deployment of nursing staff resources ensuring enough staff with licenses on each shift coordination and timely statistical reporting of incidents acuity fluctuations participate in QA/PI activities implementation and maintenance of department policies and standards of care and responsible for education of the direct care nursing staff on their unit(s). This position communicates acuity injury of staff from assaultive/combative patients and other employee absences to the Staffing Office to assure safe coverage with enough licensed staff on all shifts to meet the master staffing plan and staffing grid developed by ADONs with overall recruitment and retention of nursing staff on their assigned unit(s).

Job Duties:

Management/Clinical Direction/Supervision:
  • This position is responsible for the direction supervision and management of all Nursing staff of the assigned unit.
  • This position works under the direction of the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)
  • The NM coordinates staffing schedules with the Staffing Office to include CDHS staff and agency staff. After all resources have been exhausted this position reports to the facility in the event that staffing needs are not being met and a solution is not able to be resolved remotely during off business hours.
  • The NM is responsible for monitoring timecards for accuracy and making any necessary adjustments.
  • The NM makes decisions about staff needs ensures nursing standards are being followed and provides supervision to all shifts and nursing disciplines classified below the NMs.
  • The NM attends and participates in committees and interview panels as designated by the ADON and/or the Director of Nursing (DON).
  • This position is responsible for all the nursing services provided on the assigned unit.
  • This position is responsible for ensuring that all nursing assignments and duties are completed and in compliance with CMHHIP policies and psychiatric and medical nursing standards licensure requirements and governing bodies.
  • Unit nursing staff is notified promptly of changes to processes policies and procedures through communication methods to include Cornerstone Rosters meetings email and individual contact.
  • The NM assigns a current direct care staff as a mentor for guidance and training to students and new employees. Ensures nursing staff are knowledgeable of each patients Plan of Care Individual Behavior Plan and/or patient specific medical/behavioral treatment needs. Supervision to direct reports is conducted regularly.
  • Disseminates information to other disciplines and department leadership regarding nursing directives using effective communication. Collaborates with the Clinical Safety Specialist (CSS) supervisor in the event of safety and security needs to ensure safety measures are delivered.
  • The NM provides documentation to support recommended corrective and disciplinary actions signing performance plans and appraisals and resolving informal grievances at the lowest level.
  • Draft and deliver Confirming Memos Plan of Actions and other corrective actions after consulting ADON.
  • Code of Conduct and staff/patient safety concerns are communicated to the ADON immediately.
Department Standards:
  • This position ensures and maintains competency in nursing standards of care on the assigned unit by creating and maintaining processes to communicate and follow up with assigned staff.
  • The formulation of unit procedures and practices are developed and maintained by the NM.
  • These procedures adhere to CDHS Code of Conduct and CMHIP Code of Ethics approved by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).
  • Current knowledge of new policies standards updates literature related to nursing and specialty areas is maintained and communicated to subordinates.
  • Nursing supervisors are notified promptly utilizing the chain of command regarding issues related to the care and safety of patients and nursing staff members.
  • The NM leads and follows up with patient care and treatment.
  • The NM follows up with staff to ensure understanding of information to include weekly NEC minutes roster and various communications.
  • The NM works collaboratively with all departments and provides assistance when needed.
  • Attends all assigned meetings or sends a nursing representative.
  • The NM provides guidance and direction for daily cross shift report weekly nursing rounds direct care nursing and communication to unit staff/clinical team.
  • Assures the unit(s) supervised are staffed appropriately according to hospital procedure along with assuring schedules are maintained and accurate. Responsible for assigned staff to maintain their licensure.
Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement (QA/PI) and Nursing Trackers:
  • The NM implements actions to maximize the quality of patient care at the unit level by directing and coordinating the timely reporting of statistical and quality assurance data.
  • Nursing participation is coordinated at the unit level through interdisciplinary monitoring evaluation and follow-up on QA/PI activities.
  • The NM reviews patient occurrences and responds to performance issues of assigned staff.
  • This position performs audits of Nursing documentation and delivery of nursing care to identify and address staff deficiencies.
  • Follow up of electronic record deficiencies to develop performance measurement tools for improvement of processes and decrease errors.
  • Collaborates with non-nursing personnel to address related performance issues.
  • The NM l completes the QAPI audit to identify any deficiencies.
  • The NM creates a plan of action to correct the competency issue and provide adequate training to resolve the deficiency.
Staff Development/Competencies:
  • The NM implements actions to maximize the productivity of assigned nursing personnel by mentoring training leading and providing feedback through performance reviews and evaluation for continued staff development and assess competency needs.
  • Position Descriptions and performance plans are kept current and provided to assigned staff to ensure they understand their job duties expectations and required competencies.
  • New employees contract staff and Nursing students to the unit are oriented and assigned a -service training is kept current and administered to assigned staff.
  • This position ensures assigned staffs knowledge and fluency with the Behavior Electronic Health Record(BEHR) Cornerstone assignments to include mandatory rosters and training and the Kronos Timekeeping System.
  • Creates and maintains an educational profile for each assigned staff and monitors compliance with mandatory competencies.
  • Collaborates with Nurse Educators to provide education when staff are in need of further training.
  • This position ensures assigned staff follow various manuals standards and regulations to include but not limited to: Nursing Intranet Site Resources Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM)-latest Version Pharmacy Formulary Treatment Plans Infection Control Manual Physicians Orders Court orders Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation Standards Environment of Care Manual Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Safety Data Sheets Colorado State Personnel Procedure Manual Affirmative Action policy Colorado Workers Compensation guidelines Rainbow book and Emergency Guides ADA statutes Colorado Alliance for the Mentally Ill recommendations Patients Rights Handbook.
Patient Care/Nursing Care:
  • The NM is responsible for the 24 hour/7 day nursing care provided on the assigned unit and maintenance of a safe secure and therapeutic environment.
  • This position provides care using the patient centered approach and promptly responds to patients psychiatric and/or medical issues participates in Trauma Informed Care and Patient Centered Care initiatives and understands and promotes its principles implements audits and reviews nursing care provided on the unit.
  • This is accomplished through providing follow up for proper nursing care; ie. documentation for seclusion or seclusion and restraint monitoring proper procedure for respiratory services oxygen and oxygen equipment and laboratory services after hours if applicable and obtaining data from the AED. Participates and ensures staff correctly identifies patients prior to administration of medications treatments blood testing or starting an invasive procedure.
  • Follows and maintains Infection control standards and regulations as the Infection Control Nurse in collaboration with the Infection Control Department. Ensures patients are in compliance with required vaccinations.
  • This position evaluates concerns related to nursing care plans by assessing identifying planning implementing evaluating and revising the nursing care given based on the nursing history.
  • Utilize Patient Rights for mental health legal issues and comply with policy and procedure in these areas.
  • Provide intervention in critical situations as necessary.
  • Counsels and educates patients of their medications medical and psychiatric care needs during group therapies Plan of Care Reviews Plan of Care Formulations 1:1 therapies educating the patients family.
  • Represent nursing in multidisciplinary meetings and follow through with communication to the nursing team.
  • Keeps their line of authority apprised to patient change of status medical/psychiatric needs and when patients are admitted and returned from the outside medical services.
  • This position can be utilized to provide coverage as needed on any unit.

Minimum Qualifications Substitutions Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:

Current valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC)

AND

Four years (4) of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.

Appropriate education will substitute for up to two (2) years of the required experience on a year-for-year basis


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Leadership experience supervising/managing an environment that requires collaboration with multiple disciplines.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead multi-level nursing disciplines on the unit through training mentorship development and quality care improvement measures

  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language; effectively and fluently communicates in English both verbally and in writing
  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings
  • Willing and able to travel.
